18 Professions That Draw In The Worst Kinds of People

Have you ever noticed that people from a certain profession seem to share similar characteristics? It’s a thing! A recent online survey asked, “Which profession attracts the worst kinds of people?” Here are the top 18 responses.

Nursing

Unpopular opinion but nurses. There is a lot, A LOT, of toxic abusive high-school girl drama-type behavior among nurses. It’s such an important job and about half the people doing it shouldn’t be responsible for a yogurt, let alone a human being’s life.”

It was weird how all of the mean girls from my high school went to college for nursing.”

Multi-level marketing

They’re all bullies and manipulators. The worst kind of people will tell you that your brother’s funeral is a good place to recruit ‘investors.’”

“I think they are just desperate and innocent people. You know how multi-level marketing companies market themselves. It’s pretty easy for any innocent person to get lured into it, thinking it’s just a decent job. I mean, they are the victims of the multi-level marketing, except the people who are aware that the company they are working for attracts naive and desperate people.”

Property

Real-Estate Agents

I have had a few friends who became realtors later in life. The ones that stayed with it, it totally changed who they are. After a few years, they are hardly recognizable as the same people. Vain, shallow, and 100% of the time, they are in character and trying to sell.”

“I’m a real estate agent and have been for eight years as of this week. I hate the profession as a whole, but I understand that most of my colleagues are just chasing the dollar. There are a lot of not nice people in this business. We literally have to wear all the hats as people come to us for help with the biggest purchase of their lives, which brings out both the best and worst of people. It’s draining to those of us who care.”

Reality TV

I blame the people that create it and the people that watch it. The stars are just idiots taken along for the ride.”

“I read an interview with some reality TV contestant once, and he said he got cast because he was in a pool of auditioners. Some other girl who was auditioning got asked a question and he interrupted her answer. The producers apparently took that as a signal that he was exactly the kind of guy they were looking for, a loud person who rudely interrupts people.”

Influencer marketing

Yeah! Nowadays, Influencers are popping up around the world like Influenza. Some are duping people by promoting fake/harmful products and services just to earn a couple of dollars!”

“It’s genuinely irritating that there is almost no distinction between genuinely good YouTubers making great and interesting content and the absolute dross influencers making copy-paste videos with the same played-out opinions.”

Paparazzi

I don’t particularly pay attention to celebrity stuff, but I’ll never forget when paparazzi climbed up the fence around Michelle Williams (I think that’s her name, it’s been a minute) after Heath Ledger (her partner) died to snap photos of a woman grieving her partner who had unexpectedly passed away a matter of days ago.”

“Absolutely lifeless humans. Audio-visual bottom feeders with a camera, searching for scraps and the next payment. Not only does their profession provide something that is arguably valueless, but the means to produce it is abominable.”

Politics

I think the kind of people attracted to this is very polarised. They’re either very good people or evil.”

“I always thought someone seeking to be a politician should not be trusted to be in charge… But rather, we should spy on people like we probably already do, kidnap the ones that demonstrate good qualities, and force them to compete… in elections! ‘Sorry, ma’am/sir, your thoughtfulness, altruism, and lack of rabid affiliation with any one group of ideology have resulted in your forced running for president. May the odds be ever in your favor.’”

Architecture

I thought I wanted to be an architect… but then I met a bunch of architects. And architecture students. And architecture professors. And they were pretty much all not nice people. It was weird. I mean… how could it be so consistent? But there you have it.”

“One of the big reasons I dropped out of the architecture program was that most of my peers were pretentious and hostile.”

Law enforcement

There’s a reason why there’s an old trope of the school bully growing up to become a cop. Some people are going to be attracted to occupations where you can intimidate people and have authority over them.”

“Also prosecutors who withhold exculpatory evidence, encourage false testimony to get convictions, pursue convictions when they know there isn’t enough evidence, and push plea bargains on the innocent under threat of mandatory minimum sentences.”

Stockbroking

I have some friends who are stockbrokers. I love them, but man, they are some rubbish talkers. And not like, “Oh, they’re a good salesman and could sell you anything,” No, it’s like they make stuff up as they go along and try to sound confident in what they say.”

“I knew a kid in the school of business at the university I attended who was angling for a Goldman Sachs internship. Total ‘rising star’ student kind of kid with a ‘big future’ on Wall Street. He was a total psychopath.”

Recruitment

I was a recruiter. I can confirm. My office had tons of drinking, drugs, and married executives sleeping with recruiters 10+ years younger.”

“I’ve met so many recruiters who put such little effort into it or are so crazy oblivious it’s amazing. Like, why would I quit a full-time position in an interesting field for less money on a contract that doesn’t pay benefits?”

Sales

“Generally, ‘Professional’ salespeople have no concern for the business as a whole, and many tend to hop from product to product and market to market. The worst part, though, is the borderline contempt they show for the people who actually have to deliver on their insane commitments.”

I only have experience in B2B/tech, and in general, the sales guys I’ve dealt with across multiple companies have had the same issues. Selling stuff, we can’t deliver, throwing us under the bus internally, and treating delivery not even half as well as they do clients.”

Insurance

Had an acquaintance I haven’t spoken to in over ten years call me last year out of the blue. He wanted to sell me life insurance. I have no children, no dependents, and am unmarried. Who exactly is this policy meant to care for? Oh, it’s an investment vehicle? Of course, of course.”

“I interviewed at a place while I was in college because I needed something flexible and part-time. It was an insurance company that paid “not horrible” wages, but you could make a lot on commission. They would just do cold calls all day and try to convince people they needed their financial products. The people there gave me sleazy used car salesman vibes.”

Tow truck drivers

Yes!! I had an accident on the highway a few years ago. It was a multiple-car collision, and nobody got hurt. But I remember a couple of towing truck drivers literally fighting each other to take my car even though it was fully drivable.”

“That’s on the private sector, though. Not the same story when you’re dealing with a non-profit such as AAA/CAA.”

Mental health professionals

Having spent some time in a mental facility as 1013… I fully agree. I voiced concern to one of the more angelic doctors, who told me point blank, “Don’t mess with these people. Just do your time and get out. They will make things really bad really quick”. I cried that night and then just went along like a zombie until I could go home.”

Security

Former bouncer in my youth, and I can 100% confirm that most of the drama we were in was caused by the two biggest guys that just wanted to mess with people and brag about it while we had our after-shift drinks.”

“I went to high school with a guy who was attempting to break up a fight at a club, and the bouncer gave him a beating that caused a traumatic brain injury and put him in a coma. When he came out of the coma, his capacity was diminished to the point that he couldn’t go back to his previous job, and he eventually killed himself.”

Elementary School Front Desk Administration

So true! They’re either the sweetest grandmother ever or a troll in women’s clothing.”

“There is a high turnover because they spend the day being yelled at by entitled parents.”

Academia

“Intelligent people in very niche areas, with no consideration for the real world and social interaction, while simultaneously being told they are the best in the world at certain specific subject areas (which is true, but just not as many people care as academics think they do). You end up with an unnecessarily toxic environment of people trying to intellectually one-up each other and throw anyone off the ladder on their way up.”

“Came here looking for this. I have NEVER been so unprofessionally treated as I have in academia. Although I am lucky to have found a number of lovely people to help me get by, I have also encountered a staggering amount of unjustifiably arrogant people at every turn.”
