A Clever Technician Teaches Selfish TV Station Owner a Valuable Lesson After He Refuses to Pay for His Work.

A man recently shared a story about his friend who successfully got a stingy TV station owner to pay twice the amount owed. The owner had been making excuses when asked for payment. Here’s what the consultant’s friend had to say about the incident:

The Owner Was Horrible

The man described the owner, “My first job out of college was for a local TV station. The owner was (and still is) the worst human being I’ve ever met. This guy has money, but he will cheat and lie and do anything to get out of paying his bills.”

The Station Had A New Contract

Not long after the man started working at the station, the manager signed a contract with DirectTV to become part of their broadcast package. It meant more exposure for the channel, which would be great.

But the deal came with one condition; the station would have to update its entire system within two months. The station would be hit with a hefty fine if it missed the deadline.

The Owner Hired His Friend

The owner had no idea how to plan or implement the upgrade, so he asked if anyone in the station could help. The man could because one of his friends was a tech expert with the right experience.

He gave the station manager his friend’s details, who was then taken on as a freelance consultant. The consultant said he could do the job for $15K.

The Owner Was Cheap

The owner said that was too much and asked the freelancer to find a way to do it for less than half of that. Then he asked the consultant to buy all the hardware and equipment upfront, promising the station would reimburse him once the job was done.

When the man found out about the deal from his friend, alarm bells started ringing.

He Warned His Friend

“Knowing what a cheapskate and dog this guy is, I warned my friend not to front the money because he wouldn’t get paid back,” said the station employee.

But his friend didn’t seem worried. In fact, he was as cool as a cucumber. “He just smiled and said to watch him,” continued the man.

The Owner Made Excuses

The consultant finished the job. The upgrade was a great success, and the local TV channel started to do really well. The consultant had done what he had been hired to do.

That’s when the trouble started. “My friend went in and presented the owner with the bill. Immediately the usual excuses started: ‘Oh, I’m a little short this month, can I pay you later?’ etc.,” the man recalled.

He Had A Trump Card

But the consultant didn’t get angry or annoyed. He let the owner try to wriggle out of the bill for a few more minutes. Then he pulled out his trump card. And it showed why this guy knew he would always get paid.

The System Required Codes

“Not only did my friend threaten to take all the equipment back and take the station off the air, but he also revealed that in order to get the uplink working for cheap, someone had to come in EVERY DAY and code the broadcast manually.”

And the consultant was the one person in the world with the codes. Genius.

There Was More

The man’s friend wasn’t done yet. The station owner had tried to squeeze him, so he decided to squeeze back. He told the owner to pay him what he was owed, PLUS a $2,000/month “consulting fee,” or the station would go dark.

The owner agreed, and now the total cost will rack up to double the $15K he didn’t want to pay in the first place. This is high-level, professional revenge.

Never Try To Out-smart A Technician

The moral of the story? Short-term cost-cutting will usually backfire in the long term. And never (ever) try to pull a fast one on the tech guy because they can pull the plug whenever they want.

The man was so impressed by his friend’s befitting revenge and intuitive foresight that he shared the story on the internet for others to enjoy.

One user said, “Not really revenge, as it was planned out in advance in case (when) he was going to get screwed rather than after, but still a good read.”

Another wrote, “Decent people pay what they owe. Dirtbags don’t. And it’s great to see one of these cheapskates get what they deserve.”
