A Family Was Evicted by Mistake but The New Tenant Won’t Switch Apartments with Them Because It’s Not Her Problem

A woman recently asked if she should have switched apartments with a family who were wrongly evicted. She got their apartment after the incident, but she doesn’t want to move.

A few months ago, the woman and her boyfriend began their search for a brand-new apartment.

Soon, they found a two-bedroom apartment that they liked. They decided that the home was perfect for them after a tour of the model room.

A few days after the woman and her boyfriend signed the lease for the apartment, they were contacted by the family that was still living in that house.

“They said that they were served an eviction notice because of a mistake with the auto-pay feature of their rent,” she said.

“They didn’t see the follow-up warning, and the landlord put their apartment up for availability before they could get their finances together to pay everything back.”

The people that lived in the apartment were allowed to re-sign, but they were unable to get back their exact unit as the woman, and her boyfriend had already taken it.

The property manager that oversaw the apartment explained that he would be willing to let the family re-sign, but only if the woman and her boyfriend were happy with, and would agree to, switching.

Though the units are identical on the inside, the outside of the properties is completely different.

“The unit we signed for faces the community garden, whereas the one they wanted us to switch to faces a busy street,” she said.

The woman didn’t want the street unit as it was quite noisy and didn’t have a great view.

They Felt Badly About It

“There was no third option where we could find another unit within the complex, and we can not break the signed lease to go somewhere else.”

The woman felt bad for the family but told them she would not have signed up for an apartment if the only unit available to her was one that faced the main road.

Not only that, but the woman and her boyfriend are bound to lease the property when signed.

To submit the cancellation fee would be forfeiting two-and-a-half months of rent, which they simply cannot afford.

As such, she apologized for the situation but was unwilling to switch apartments with the family.

In response, the family tried to argue with the woman, noting that the street nearby is not particularly noisy and that the interiors of both apartments are the same.

The woman, however, stuck to her guns.

The family was upset and even accused the woman and her boyfriend of ‘stealing’ their home.

They also said that the whole affair would cost them hundreds of dollars in moving fees, but once again, the woman stood her ground.

Eventually, the family did have to move out, and the woman and her boyfriend moved into the apartment.

She has seen the family around on a few separate occasions, and it hasn’t always been pleasant. One time, the dad was getting the mail and sneered and spat at the ground when he saw her.

Though the woman feels bad about the overall situation, she does not believe she is at fault for anything. But is she?

“It is the property manager’s fault. Their anger should be directed at them,” said one commenter.

“The fact that the property manager was willing to give them your contact information and put you in an uncomfortable situation tells me that they are not very professional.”
