A Man Almost Died in a Paragliding Accident but His Children Are Sick of Him Talking About the Accident and Want Him To Stop

A man recently asked the Reddit community if he was wrong for wanting his dad to stop talking about his paragliding accident. The dad has become obsessed with the incident, and the son thinks it’s affecting his health.

The man’s 58-year-old father was involved in a paragliding accident in mid-February. The father suffered significant injuries, including a broken neck, pelvis, and a punctured lung. “Luckily, he was immediately found by walkers who had him airlifted to hospital. He should make a full recovery (given enough rest),” he said.

He lived on the other side of the world from his father and initially thought he would need to return to the UK to care for him. However, his father’s injuries were healing well, and the man’s stepmother and sister were able to provide the help he needed.

Due to the physical distance, he often got updates about his father’s recovery through social media. “Since the accident, he’s posted on Facebook at least once or twice a week about the experience and how grateful he is to be alive and to all those who helped him,” he said.

The father had become obsessed with social media, constantly writing posts and articles about his accident. He was also neglecting his doctor’s recommendations for light exercise to prevent muscle atrophy. The man’s sister recently told him that their father’s behavior completely differed from what his Facebook posts showed.

“During one of these short walks, he experienced visual hallucinations and after a visit to the hospital discovered he had dissected arteries which caused stroke-like symptoms,” he explained.

The father has recently decided to walk a mile a day for a month to raise money for the air ambulance, which the man admits is a noble idea, but it’s risky given his injuries. “Any suggestions of other activities like reading a book, playing a game, watching a movie have been refused,” he said.

“I thought he was getting a bit fixated on the accident, but my sister confirms he’s an irritable nightmare to be around who seems utterly focused on proving himself rather than just getting better,” he explained.

She wants him to talk to their father and help him shift his focus away from the crash. She is also worried that his constant social media presence might cause people to become jaded, which could impact his fundraising efforts for the air ambulance.

He asked the internet for advice

He wondered if he’d be wrong to confront his father about his Facebook obsession, and he had no idea how he should approach the subject, so he turned to the internet for help.

One person said, “Going from a highly physically capable and physically demanding existence, like it sounds your dad had, to now being somewhat disabled and stuck in one place really will mess with his head.”

Another person replied, “You and your sister can try crowd-sourcing the money, so he doesn’t have to walk to raise money.”
