A Teacher Refused to Let the Kids Leave School Because She Wanted the Parents To Pick Them Up Instead of Letting Them Walk Home – Was She in The Wrong?

An English teacher recently got into trouble for telling her students’ parents to come and pick them up after class instead of letting them walk home alone. She wondered if she had gone too far. Here’s what she had to say.

At 28, this teacher moved to Europe to teach English to 10-12-year-olds. She worked in a busy town center, a place where she felt young kids could face dangers.

She was shocked to find out the kids walked home alone after school, which usually ended between 1-2 pm. This worried her a lot.

She didn’t feel it was safe for the kids to walk alone. She believed it was the school’s job to keep the kids safe until their parents arrived.

To address this, she sent notes home with the students. “I sent kids with a note letting parents know that they’re expected to collect their kids or they will be called and expected to collect their children and the kids won’t be released on their own,” she explained.

Parents Didn’t Show Up

She expected parents to come after the note, but only one parent showed up, and they were upset about being asked to come. This surprised her.

She didn’t let the kids leave because they were too young to be on their own. “So I waited with the kids for 30 minutes. The kids were restless and kept telling me it’s fine to let them go, which I refused, they’re literally children,” she stated.

Parents Finally React

After waiting for over 30 minutes, she started calling the parents. They said it was okay for the kids to walk, but she wanted them to come and pick them up.

Two hours later, all the parents had come. She hoped they’d understand her concerns. However, the next day, only two students showed up for her class. Some parents even complained to the school about her actions.

She received many angry emails from the parents. The school decided to have a talk with her about what happened. She looked to colleagues for support but didn’t find much. One even said the kids were okay walking or taking the bus. She emphasized that she acted out of concern for the kids’ well-being.

One user said, “Europeans don’t coddle their children like Americans.”

Another said, “What teacher would hold the kids and demand a parent come to get them when there are clearly other arrangements in place? And then get offended when they are told that’s not how things are done there?”
