A Woman Deleted Important Files from The Company’s Server After Getting Fired, But Her Colleague Tricked Her Into Revealing What She Did

Her Colleague Was Like a “Karen”

There was a lady at her workplace who acted like what people stereotypically called a “Karen.” “Karen’s” job title was project manager, but she really did the work of an office administrator, so most of the internal projects were assigned to her.

But then, their bosses realized that “Karen” could not handle one of the important projects, so, they reassigned it to her instead. But this made the “Karen” very upset and she tried every means to sabotage the project.

The Project Got Slower

Because of “Karen’s” behavior, the project got delayed and her bosses were not happy. “When I commented that it was difficult to get information from Karen, she became super-sweet and said she was bending over backward to help me, and that I didn’t understand the project,” she said. She found the “Karen’s” sudden change of attitude odd.

A few weeks later, there was a general layoff in the company, and “Karen” lost her job. She received her three-month severance checks and was also made to sign a non-disclosure on her exit, as well as confirm that she had handed over all company materials and files.

One day, she needed some files for the project, but when she went to get them, everything was gone. Clearly, “Karen” had deleted all the files and this was before people commonly used tools like Teams and Google Drive, where files were shared and saved automatically.

She was so angry that “Karen” had made her job much harder by deleting the files. So she wanted to get back at her. She knew that “Karen” wasn’t great with technology, so she decided to use that to her advantage. There was a company policy that said emails of employees who had left the company would be forwarded to their department heads for a few months.

She Sent an Email

Now she was aware that “Karen” used her work email for personal things, like LinkedIn. So, she went to her LinkedIn page and sent a message that read, “Hi Karen – I heard about your departure. I hope you can use the time to take the vacation you talked about. I went to grab some of the files but noticed they were missing. Do you have backups you could share?”

“Karen” replied and admitted that she deleted everything in her email to get back at her. Unfortunately, the message went straight to “Karen’s” old work email, which automatically got to her former manager’s inbox, and finally to the Human Resources Department.

The Human Resources Department found “Karen” guilty of violating the severance agreement and as a result, she lost all the money she was supposed to get as severance checks. When she found out what happened to the “Karen,” she didn’t feel remorseful for getting back at her.

The Online Community Responded

One person wrote, “I still don’t understand why people use their work email for anything personal. So stupid.”

Another person asked, “Why would anyone put something like that down in writing at all, anywhere?”
