Her Friend Invited Her to An Expensive Birthday Meal but Then She Found out That She Had to Pay for It Herself

A young woman in high school recently asked for advice after she refused to attend her friend’s birthday meal. She was excited to go but then found out that every guest had to pay $60 for their own meal.

The 16-year-old was recently invited by her friend, Amelia, to her upcoming birthday party. Amelia told her that she would send out invitations that provided all the necessary details. The girl said ‘okay’ and thanked her.

The teenager continued, “Next day, Amelia sent me my invitation. The party was taking place at a popular all-you-can-eat buffet that I loved. The party was also the day before my own birthday.”

Initially, this was something that furthered the girl’s excitement, as she expected double the food.

She then remembered that she had exams the day after Amelia’s party, the day of her actual birthday. Plus, the party was on a Sunday, and the woman started having reservations about going as there was a good chance that she would return home late.

The Girl Had Time To Decide

The RSVP date was two weeks away, so the woman figured she at least had some time to think about it. Recently, during a class, one of the girl’s other friends told people that she was unfortunately unable to attend the party.

It was then that Amelia told the girl: “Oh, speaking of the party, everyone is paying for themselves.”

This was something that really shocked the teenager, which Amelia noticed. She then told the woman to look on the website for pricing information and turned away.

The girl explained, “Now, I’ve been there before. It costs at least $60. My birthday was the next day, and I planned to go shopping.”

After this revelation, the woman no longer felt like attending, especially when she also considered the other reasons that had previously made her hesitate.

“I figured that if you’re going to invite someone out, you should at least pay for them,” the high schooler said. “Plus, the birthday person gets to eat free at that buffet, so I felt like it was unfair.”

Another Friend Backed Out

The day after this, another friend of the woman’s informed Amelia that she would not attend as her mother thought it was absurd that she would have to pay for herself.

This was a further reason for the woman not to attend as it was a friend that she really wanted to go there.

When Amelia later asked the girl if she could attend, she said no. Amelia got upset at this and asked her why.

The woman simply explained to her that she was not willing to spend so much money at a birthday party when her own birthday was the day after.

Amelia, in response, rolled her eyes and called the girl “broke,” which annoyed the girl, who told her friend that she should be paying for the people attending.

This escalated into a full-blown argument in which Amelia called the young woman entitled and fake. Amelia kept telling her friend that it was easy to pay the money, even though the girl insisted she did not want to spend so much.

Many of the girl’s friends were on her side, but she could not stop thinking back to the argument.

She has now turned to Reddit to ask the community if she was in the wrong for not wanting to pay so much money to celebrate someone else’s birthday so she could treat herself the next day, on her own birthday.

One online user posted, “My only problem was that the invite didn’t have the cost, but I’m guessing the birthday girl isn’t all that experienced on what information should be on an invitation.”

Another Redditor said, “As a teen, if I saw that it was being held at a buffet restaurant, I’d probably bring $30, maybe $50 with me. The average cost of buffets is 20 dollars per person.”

Another User Agreed

A third agreed, “At 16 years old, I wouldn’t think to bring this much money to a dinner out with friends unless I’m going with someone known to be pretty fancy.”
