A Woman’s Refusal to Fund Her Niece’s Disneyland Trip Leads to Strained Relationship and Resentment With Her Sister

A woman recently had a huge argument with her sister-in-law when she refused to pay for her niece’s trip to Disneyland, despite knowing that her sister-in-law couldn’t afford it. Here’s what she had to say.

They had a family tradition

In the woman’s family, it was tradition to take a special trip for every child’s 10th birthday, and her parents wanted to continue this tradition with her children, Sadie and Jamie. “Sadie will be turning ten soon, so my parents told her that they will be taking her and Jamie to Disneyland,” she said.

The grandparents were only paying for the kids’ expenses, so the woman and her husband, Sam, decided to save up and join the trip to make memories as a family.

However, when Sam’s sister Emma heard about the trip, she also wanted her daughter Avery to join them. The woman said that Emma “has been forcefully trying to get her way even after I’ve said no countless times.”

She doesn’t have a lot of money

Emma, a single mother, has had difficulty providing the same experiences and opportunities for Avery due to a lack of money.

Since Avery had recently turned ten and did not have a big celebration, Emma felt she was also entitled to the Disney trip, even though the grandparents were not related to her.

The woman thought Emma’s request was rude and explained that her parents were under no obligation to pay for Avery’s trip. Emma then suggested that the woman and her husband, who were already saving up for themselves, could probably save for Avery as well.

“I love my niece and feel guilty she isn’t able to have such experiences, but it should not be a financial burden my husband and I have to constantly bear. We already help a lot by buying groceries, babysitting, paying for sports teams and school supplies,” the woman said.

When the woman firmly told Emma that neither her parents nor she and her husband would pay for Avery’s trip, Emma played the “we’re all family/it takes a village to raise a child” card.

This angered the woman and her husband because Emma didn’t seem appreciative of the help they were already providing. Emma never offered to contribute to Avery’s expenses for the trip because she expected the woman’s family to cover everything.

The woman eventually told Emma that if she wanted to pay for Avery, they would happily take care of Avery during the trip, but Emma declined, saying she couldn’t afford to pay for it.

“Now my daughter is saying Avery told her I ruined their trip, and Avery hates me,” she said. The woman suspects Emma had prematurely told Avery that she’d be going to Disneyland and has blamed the woman for not letting Avery join.

The woman sought advice online

Someone replied, “If for no other reason than this is your parents’ gift to your kids, it’s kind of crummy for that to be hijacked. Emma’s entitlement is another issue altogether. I mean, nothing about Disney is cheap. That she can’t afford to even contribute makes the whole thing worse.”

Another person said, “This is exactly the problem when you do too much for someone… they often become spoiled and entitled. Instead of gratitude, it’s grabbing. Instead of appreciation, it’s expectation.”
