Hooked on Acceptance: 17 Addictions Society Turns a Blind Eye To

Unfortunately, lots of things are addictive, even everyday things that you don’t normally think about. A recent online survey asked, “What addiction is seen as completely normal by society?” Here are the 17 most common answers.

“I really can’t help but wonder how kids are affected developmentally by technology- not by themselves using it, but from mothers and fathers who are addicted to it.”

“How to Break Up with Your Phone by Catherine Price is a great book to help do exactly what the title says!”

Shopping

“I deliver for UPS, and there are several houses on my route that get new clothes nearly every day.”

“I’m a carrier, too. I have some customers that I would probably call a wellness check for if they stopped getting stuff.”

Bargain hunting

“I know many people who are addicted to “Bargain” shopping. They haunt these return warehouses that sell goods returned to big retailers like Costco or Target, or goods that just never sold well in the first place.”

“I have an aunt like that. All year she’ll buy all sorts of random stuff on sales. For Christmas, she’ll then make gift baskets for everyone with the pointless stuff she has accumulated.”

Sugar

“I’ve gone from drinking a 750ml bottle of whiskey per day to now three years completely sober. I still can’t curb my sugar addiction.”

“It took a while for this one to pop up, and I fully agree. People don’t realize how addicted they are to sugar. It’s literally in every processed food.”

Caffeine

“I find those people annoying who always have to tell everyone how much they like coffee and how they can’t function without it, with typical phrases like ‘don’t even talk to me before I’ve had my morning coffee.'”

“Caffeine in general, really. Caffeinated soda is the most consumed beverage in the US.”

Lottery tickets

“I have a friend who wastes at least a third of his income on scratch-offs and just gambling in general. I watched him clean off a scratcher for $100 just to go spend it all on more scratchers that only ended up winning ten bucks. Then complained about being broke and asked me for money.”

“Also, it’s super weird to me that the government is like, ‘Gambling is a horrible addiction, and we will not stand anyone making money this way… Unless you would like to gamble with the government… We will allow this.’”

Social media

“Everyone is always on social media, even I am personally an ‘addict’ I’m constantly taking pictures for my Instagram, posting on my Snapchat, or scrolling through TikTok. It’s an endless cycle between the three apps.”

“It’s so rubbish feeling like ‘just’ experiencing something isn’t good enough. If I forget to take photos/videos of something, I feel so disappointed.”

Consumerism

“I really wish that we simply had more free time, skills, and raw materials as opposed to mass-produced single-use products.”

“It’s such a weird thing how much this takes center stage for people at some point. I feel like once people earn money for some years, all they talk about is what they bought, how much it cost, and how much they think I thought it cost just to tell me that they paid 20% less than I expected.”

Tiktok

“The algorithm is insanely good at keeping people on it for long periods of time.”

“My attention span has improved so much since deleting it! I also feel like the app was purposely feeding me content that made me feel insecure and then feeding me ways to ‘fix’ those problems via products.”

Alcohol

“Yep. I had a brush with alcoholism and stepped back. Realizing how much my friends drink was very eye-opening. I’m a midwesterner, and a lot – A LOT – of our hangouts and events are alcohol focused. Especially in winter. It’s a huge bummer.”

“Will say that there’s been a real laundering of alcoholism through the wine mom thing. Like that it’s a girl boss move to drink Chardonnay at 2 pm as opposed to being indicative of a problem.”

Attention

“Totally agree, when you see what people are capable of doing for attention, pity, buzz …”

“The easiest way to prevent this sort of stuff is to talk to your kids and make them feel like you love them. Secure homes don’t create insecure people.”

McDonald’s

“Absolutely. I have no problem going three months with no McDonald’s and then I have one cheeseburger on a whim, and I’m back every other day for a week.”

“There ain’t nothin’ like a box of hot nuggets!”

Overworking

“Sometimes someone is so slow at their job that they secretly have to do extra hours to catch up so they don’t get fired.”

“It can cause severe damage to physical and mental health, something that money may or may not repair.”

Religion

“A girl I know can’t have a conversation without quoting the Bible or talking about Jesus like he is an old friend of hers. I’m not religious, so I find it annoying, but everyone else seems fine with it.”

“In my country, there are so many like this. It’s like they don’t have a mind of their own. A cult mentality where only the words of their leader are deemed essential. It’s scary.”

Money

“People are encouraged to get as much as they can, more than they need, and any attempt to cut them off can provoke anger and retaliation. Instead of being addressed, the addiction is tolerated if not defended. A billionaire may often be portrayed as a success rather than someone with a worrying socially damaging problem.”

Being right

“So much of our world has become addicted to the endorphin rush they get when they work up a fit of righteous indignation. They get to point their finger at THAT bad person and proclaim their own victimhood. It is not only acceptable but even lauded. It happens on the small, individual scale, and on the large, even global scale.”

“I call it the ‘Persecution Olympics’ and it goes hand in hand with people trying to control other people’s behavior but not their own.”

Makeup

“It’s absolutely an addiction for many, many women. Most of the women I know will not leave the house without putting it on, and they’re among the more mild users I have found.”

“I gave up wearing foundation etc., five years ago because I realized I was just self-conscious of blushing so much. I feel emotions, and you can see them in my face. I’m human. Who cares?!”

Losing weight

“Especially in developing countries where people aren’t aware of issues like eating disorders, people will absolutely praise you for starving yourself. When I was deep into anorexia, I could openly starve myself in front of my family because I was on a ‘diet.’ However, my family did intervene once I started looking emaciated. But people around me would straight up praise me for not eating.”

“Exactly the same here. I showed my partner a pair of jeans in the size I used to be (size 4 UK) and told him I was praised for this most of all by my own mother. He was so shocked. I was under 18 at this size, and no one ever asked if I was okay.”
