“Ban It”: Florida School Pulls Bible Off Shelves Due to ‘Explicit Content’ Controversy

A Florida school district temporarily removed the Bible from its shelves after a challenge based on a state law, but has since returned it.

The Bible is ‘unsuitable’

The Volusia County Schools took the action after Christina Quinn contested the Bible’s presence, citing “sexually explicit content,” as per WOFL news in Orlando. Florida’s HB 1069, an extension of the “Don’t Say Gay” law, permits parents to object to books they find unsuitable, leading to their temporary removal and review.

Can’t have it both ways

Quinn mentioned to WOFL, “It is basically saying ‘What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,’ so we can’t pick some [books] and not pick others when they both have similar material.”

Protected by state law

After a three-day examination, the district reinstated the Bible, stating that it’s shielded by state law from being extracted. Notably, of the 31 books challenged this year, only the Bible was returned without any restrictions in Volusia County Schools.

Criticism of the Bible

Across the U.S., the Bible has faced scrutiny under local and state regulations that empower parents or community members to challenge books. For instance, it has been criticized for sexual themes, such as descriptions of nudity and various explicit passages.

People were outraged at the news

A person reading this story had strong views and noted, “TX and FL are the capital of the Christian nationalism in this nation, nothing shocks me at this point: what should make everyone terrified is THIS is the national GOP plan in 2025 if they get power- and they will NEVER give it back, this time.”

The law is the problem

Someone else agreed and said, “Exactly. Someone used the law they enacted to challenge the Bible being available in schools. Same thing happened in Utah, I think.”

Nothing to do with religion, it’s racism

One person called out racism, saying, “For those who look at this and see that religion is what is driving this in Florida, it’s not. It’s racism, full stop. Look at every book that’s been banned in Florida and look at the author. How many are straight white men vs. how many LGBTQIA, black, female, Jewish, or Latino?”

Another person was confused

One person didn’t understand why this was happening: “Does this happen anywhere else? I’m confused about this obsession with banning books. What does it achieve exactly?”

It’s all about control

A reader answered the aforementioned question, stating, “It achieves control. Note that the law under which it was banned was a recent one in Florida. On paper, it states that books containing sexual material and other child-unfriendly content could be challenged and removed from schools.”

It was part of their agenda

Some people agreed and commented further, “In practice (and as intended), it was used to ban books that have some themes of social issues or otherwise do not conform to the GQP’s self-proclaimed (though not by these exact words) moral authority and superiority.”

Ban the Bible

One person simply commented, “Ban it!” to which another replied, “I don’t want any book banned. If you read the Bible as literature and not a holy text, you get a lot out of it, not least the only provincial view of Roman imperialism we have left. It’s a very valuable historical resource.”

The universe was not ‘designed”

Not understanding the actual reason why the Bible was banned, a person commented, “Funnily enough, it’s not the sexual passages of the Bible that are problematic. It’s the ones about creation and revelations that are more dangerous. As soon as you think the universe was “designed,” you are immediately vulnerable to an insane amount of false logic and bad living.”
