Dad Gives Wannabe Influencer Daughter Ultimatum: “Study for a Degree or Start Paying Rent”

A man recently found himself in a difficult situation with his daughter, who wants to be an influencer. She doesn’t pay rent and doesn’t go to school. So he gave her an ultimatum to either leave, pay rent, or study. But was he wrong?

He Wanted Her to Do Well in Maths

The father has three daughters: one is 21 years old, another is 17, and the youngest is 14. He works in the field of quantum computing and has always encouraged his daughters to do well in math. He believes that math is important for getting good jobs in today’s world and finds it fascinating in its own right.

“It’s also such a fun and beautiful subject on its own,” he’d often tell them.

Despite his wife also working in another STEM-related field, all three of their daughters preferred to focus on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

He complained, “They’re all quite good at math, especially my oldest, but they prefer to spend their time on social media and not do something more useful.”

She Had Bigger Dreams

The eldest daughter had recently completed her service in the army and was living at home.

Much to her father’s dismay, her aspirations were to become an influencer, a makeup artist, or an actress, which she spent most of her time pursuing. Her parents did not make her pay rent.

He Was Worried

One day, the father watched the daughter spend hours taking photos of herself changing nail polish several times. Although he didn’t harbor any resentment towards actors or makeup artists and acknowledged the difficulty of their work, he had serious worries about the stability and profitability of such careers.

Plus, he simply didn’t understand the influencer culture, which he chalked up to his age.

They Wanted Their Kids to Get an Education

The father and his wife both advocated for their daughters to pursue higher education, preferably in a STEM field. They believed it would provide a solid foundation for a good job and independence.

They also saw it as a modern career choice that would remain relevant and in demand throughout their daughter’s working life.

She Wanted To Do Her Own Thing

However, the eldest daughter resisted this path. Despite her excellent grades, she wanted to follow her own interests, even though she currently made no income from them.

The father then presented his daughter with a choice.

He Gave an Ultimatum

“I told her that she could either leave our house, find a job to pay rent, or study. She could not expect my wife and me to support her if she doesn’t succeed in pursuing her interests, or she could start studying and stay rent-free with us while being free to pursue her interests in her spare time,” he proposed.

She Was Angry

The daughter was naturally upset by her father’s words, accusing him of sabotaging her dreams before they had a chance to take root. She admitted she didn’t enjoy math and felt getting a degree would be a waste of her time.

Her Sisters Copied Her

The father believed his choices were more than fair. He emphasized to his eldest that she also served as a role model for her younger sisters, who appeared to be following in her footsteps.

Confused and concerned by his daughter’s reaction, he wondered if his stance was indeed unreasonable, especially considering her current rent-free living situation.

Should He Insist?

Now the father is worried that his ultimatum was unfair; he doesn’t want to push his daughter away, yet he doesn’t want to set a standard of allowing his 21-year-old to pursue her vapid influencer dreams while he and his wife pay for everything.

So, he turned to the internet to seek the opinions of outsiders as to what to do for the best.

People Responded

One user suggested, “I think it’s perfectly fine to expect influencing to remain a side hustle for her spare time while she gets a job to support herself. But STEM careers aren’t the only type of careers.”

Another poster commented, “I think it’s fair that they expect her to pursue an education if they are going to support her, but she should be allowed to choose which education.”
