This Dad Won’t Spend Thousands of Dollars on His Daughter’s College Education Because He Knows She Won’t Actually Go

A dad recently asked if he was wrong for not wanting to pay for his daughter’s expensive college education because he knew she didn’t like school and just wanted to hang out with her friends.

“She hates listening to lectures in class, and she hates studying and homework, even for a subject that she’s interested in,” shared the guy. “There’s NOTHING wrong with that. She doesn’t need to be a perfect student who loves school and homework.

“I’m not going to spend thousands of dollars until she’s emotionally committed to her studies and [will] treat her education seriously,” he said.

He Thinks She Has Other Reasons

Plus, the dad has a sneaking suspicion that Vivian isn’t being honest about her intentions. He recently found out that Vivian’s best friend has enrolled at the same school and thinks this is a big reason why she now wants to go.

Her Friends Are Going

And this private college is right near a major city, with several other colleges that more of Vivian’s friends from high school will be attending.

Dad believes that Vivian has ulterior motives for wanting to go to this expensive private college. He reckons she’s more interested in having a great social life for four years rather than spending that time (and his money) on getting an excellent education to set her up for the future.

So He Offered Her a Deal

So he came up with a compromise, which would also test his daughter’s commitment to going to this particular school. He offered to pay off all of Vivian’s future student debt if she went to a community college first, then earned the grades for a place at the private school.

People Think He’s Not Being Fair

But Vivian and many of the family’s friends think that dad is being unreasonable. They can’t appreciate his point of view. Instead, they say he’s unfair, especially because he can afford the tuition fees and paid Vivian’s siblings to study at college for four years.

Pretty much everyone is against this guy, saying he should pay for the education his daughter wants. But, so far, he hasn’t backed down

“Vivian tells me that she hates school, studying, and lectures,” he said. “College is school and includes all the things she hates.

Vivian can prove she’s emotionally ready for college by attending community college and earning the grades to transfer out. I will not spend thousands of dollars unless Vivian demonstrates that she will take her education seriously.”

“It sounds like Vivian wants to go to the city to party with her friends- not go to school,” posted one of the many people who agreed with the guy.

“[You’re] making a very reasonable offer based on Vivian’s stated interest in school- which is none. And frankly, community college is a gift. It’s cheap; you can learn what you like without breaking the bank and still get a good education.”
