A woman recently asked for some advice because her neighbor was upset with her for having his car towed. Here’s what happened.

The Parking Was First Come, First Served

A woman lived in an apartment building that had parking, but it was unreserved and on a first come, first served basis.

Permits Were Available

To make things easier for those who needed accessible parking, there was a permit system in place. The woman had such a permit, meaning she was able to park in the specifically designated accessible spot.

The woman worked shifts, so she needed to get in and out of the accessible space she was parked in at various times of the day and night.

The Space Was Half Gone

One night, when she got home after midnight, she found that the accessible space she needed to park in was half-blocked by another car, which was parked awkwardly due to a lack of space elsewhere.

She Wanted It Towed

Not knowing what else to do, the woman called a tow truck because she needed to get into that spot.

Thinking the job was done, the woman parked somewhere else and went inside. However, the tow truck driver had more questions, so she had to go back out again.

The woman said, “When I went back to the lot, the tenant came out to yell at me for calling a tow.”

She Explained the Situation

The woman calmly explained why she had called for the tow. She told the man about her disability and how she needed some extra room to get in and out of her car. She asked him to park on the street and warned him that if he didn’t, he would get towed.

The man did as the woman asked, and when the accessible space was clear, she parked her own car in it.

Unfortunately, things weren’t as simple as they seemed. The woman said, “He was waiting for me in the hallway and yelled at me for 10 minutes.”

He Said She Had Special Privileges

What seemed to have really upset the man was that the woman seemed to be getting what he called “special privileges” when it came to parking. The woman told him she had an approved permit and was allowed to park in the space.

She Told Him No One Was Wrong

Despite getting yelled at, the woman went on to tell the man that no one had done anything wrong, but she was in pain and needed that space. No one was allowed to park across it, even if there wasn’t anywhere else to park.

Was She Wrong?

Was the woman wrong to call the tow truck when the man hadn’t been able to fit his car anywhere else, or should he have just parked on the street right away?

The Internet Responded

One person said, “He parked over a handicap-accessible spot without a permit. That’s a towing right there.”

Another said, “I understand it’s totally within your rights to call a tow truck, but it’s also within your rights to just ask your neighbor to please move the car first.”
