No One Would Stand for Her on The Train Because She Didn’t Look Ill but Then She Fainted and People Still Blamed Her

A woman recently fainted on a train after the other commuters refused to stand up for her. They weren’t aware of her heart condition, so they blamed her for not saying so when she felt faint. Here’s what she had to say.

The Woman Wants Advice

The woman was told that she wouldn’t have fainted if she had just explained her heart condition. She’s now asking for advice on whether she handled the situation appropriately.

She Has an Invisible Condition

The 23-year-old is relatively fit, though she has a heart condition that requires her to wear a monitor under her clothes most of the time.

She is not obviously disabled, but the condition can also cause the woman to faint at times due to a lack of oxygen, which usually occurs when she is under stress. It can also happen during activities throughout the day or even simply standing somewhere. Though it does not occur daily, it happens “regularly enough.”

She’s Anxious About It

“I have bad anxiety about leaving my house alone as I am scared that I will have an episode and not have anyone around that knows how to cope or what to do,” she said.

She Had to Take Time Off Work

The woman recently had to go on long-term sick leave from her job in central London, as she is struggling with travel and work due to her condition.

She had to go into the city to sit through meetings regarding her sick leave, and she also had to deliver some paperwork for appointments regarding her condition.

It Was a Stressful Day

The day was quite overwhelming, and as is usually the case, the woman had to rush back to the station to catch her train.

She Could Feel Something Wasn’t Right

“Once I got to the train, I did not feel right. I could feel an episode coming on and needed to sit down as this can help make the passing out safer or sometimes deter it,” she said.

There Were No Seats on The Train

The woman went to the priority seats on the train, as the train was completely packed. Two men in their late twenties were sitting there, and she approached them and asked if she could sit in one of the seats.

The Men Refused

One of the men said no and that it was not fair that they had to move, as they, too, had been working long hours. He said that it was sexist to assume they had to leave their seats because they were men.

She Needed to Sit Immediately

The woman suddenly felt as though she was about to faint and struggled with her thoughts and speech. She then told the man that she was disabled and really did need to sit down.

The Man Didn’t Believe Her

“He took one look at me and called me disgusting for lying about disability and that he could “clearly see nothing was wrong with me,” the woman explained.

She Fell and Hit Her Head

She wanted to defend herself, but before she could, she passed out, hitting her head on the corner of a chair as she fell.

When the woman came, the train had been delayed by almost half an hour as they awaited paramedics, who were called to the scene.

As the station’s first-aider checked her over, the woman could hear people talking about her.

Some Were Concerned

Some were worried about her, and some were annoyed that the man had not let her sit down.

The man explained to people that, had the woman proved she was disabled; he would have moved somewhere else.

Some Were Annoyed

Others were complaining about the fact that she could have, or should have, waited for the next train, where there may have been a seat.

The woman felt guilty about the situation, as she had caused quite a delay for all the passengers.

She Turned to the Internet for Advice

“About the idiot saying you should have proven the disability, I’m pretty sure you did,” said one commenter.

“But I’m also sure you shouldn’t have to. Certainly not to them. What business is it of theirs?”
