He Canceled His Party Because He Found out His Friends Were Going to Leave Early and Now They’re All Angry with Him

A man recently canceled his party after spending $150 on food because he found out his friends had made other plans that night. Now his friends are angry at him, and he doesn’t understand why. Here’s what he had to say.

In mid-January, the man invited seven friends to his home for a night of games and wine.

Everyone agreed to attend, but two weeks later, while hanging out with his friend Ryan, he found out that his friend Stephan had planned a ski trip for the same weekend as the party.

As the party approached, the man spent $150 on snacks, mixers, and fruit. “I then messaged everyone about how excited I was to see them all the next day,” he said

Stephan messaged back to ask if there was a schedule, to which the man replied, “No, just come by and have a good time.”

Stephan then told him that he would be leaving at 8 pm to go drinking with other friends, and because Stephen was giving two other friends a lift, that meant three people would be leaving early.

The party was called off

Another friend, Mike, said that he and his girlfriend would also be leaving early to go drinking.

Feeling disheartened by five of his seven friends planning to leave early, the man canceled the party.

He sent them all a text saying, “I’m canceling. Y’all seem to have made other plans tomorrow night anyways, so maybe another time.”

The man explained that Stephan tried to backtrack by saying he could delay his plans and stay later, but the man ignored the messages.

The next day, the man saw all his friends’ messages, and some insisted they would come regardless.

Still upset, the man sent them all a message to tell them how disappointed he was. He also called out Stephan for making other plans and reiterated that the party was canceled.

“I admit this message was a bit too emotional, and I was probably too upset still,” he said.

A month later, he got an invite to Stephan’s wedding, so he accepted the invite.

Stephan replied by saying how hurt he was over being ignored by the man.

The man said that he was hurt by Stephan making other plans, especially since they were best friends.

He apologized to Stephen

Stephan explained that he assumed the party would end at 8 pm, but the man didn’t believe him.

“During this conversation, I apologized to him three times and clarified I ignored all of them because I was too upset and didn’t want to say something I’d regret. I also apologized for hurting his feelings,” the man said.

However, Stephan stated his trust had been broken and accused the man of wasting everyone’s time because they kept their schedules open for the canceled party.

Was he wrong?

The man wondered if he was in the wrong for not specifying an end time for the party, as this was what caused the confusion. He was also worried that he was wrong for not reaching out to his friends after cooling down.

He asked the internet for advice

He felt that his friends should apologize for committing to his party but making other plans without saying anything.

Unsure what to do, but thinking Stephen was a hypocrite for not apologizing, the man turned to the internet for advice.

One person replied, “Two people told you politely and ahead of time that they were going to leave a bit early. It’s bad luck that two guests were also getting a ride from one of them, but you could have offered them a ride home or gotten an Uber if they wanted to stay later.”

“Needing to “cool off” because you learned some people were leaving at 8 pm is an overreaction. However, I sense you’re pretty young and will grow out of this. Live and learn.”
