He cared for them

“So I used to take care of both my grandparents from when I was 19 until their health started to go downhill,” the now-28-year-old began.

“None of my seven uncles or my mom really wanted to help out, so I ended up moving in with my grandparents to help out as much as I could. Grandpa was in a wheelchair, and Grandma had just gone into remission from cancer.”

The man explained that when Covid hit, his grandma became increasingly worried about what would happen if she or her husband died. She was particularly concerned that the surviving spouse wouldn’t be able to keep living in the house they’d owned for nearly 60 years.

They wanted to die there

The pair had put a lot of work into turning the 19th-century former governor’s mansion into a beautiful home that successive generations of their family had grown up in and loved. They both wanted to die in the house, but when one went, the other wouldn’t be able to afford to stay.

The man earned a decent wage and had some money saved, as he’d been living rent-free with his grandparents. He offered to buy the house from them or at least start helping, but his grandparents refused charity. They came to a compromise.

The man bought the house from his grandparents for $90,000—just 10% of its market value. By this time, his grandpa was ailing, and the man promised to a) let his grandma live there rent-free until she died, and b) keep the house in the family.

The man’s grandpa died in April 2021, and his great-aunt moved in with his grandma. They were both widows and could comfort each other. The man, meanwhile, bought another house nearby so that he could be on hand if needed.

It was the end of an era

The man’s grandma passed away two weeks ago, and after the funeral, the family gathered for the will reading. Everyone got a few treasured items, but the man got nothing, as he already had the house, which, of course, wasn’t mentioned.

After the will reading was finished, the confused relatives asked why the house wasn’t in the will, and he replied that the deceased no longer owned the property.

The family soon put two and two together and became enraged.

He asked the internet

The man revealed that angry family members were harassing him and accusing him of denying them their rightful inheritance. Some were even threatening to sue. He asked the internet for their advice.

The internet responded

The internet sympathized with the man. “Funny how much more family cares once their ‘loved ones’ are gone,” sighed one.

“They aren’t entitled to your grandparents assets,” said another. “What are they going to sue you for? For taking care of your grandparents when they wouldn’t step up?”
