On the House floor, Greene articulated her rationale, stating, “Secretary Austin has not fulfilled his job duties,” and went on to assert that, “As a matter of fact, he’s destroying our military.”

Greene condemned Austin’s approach to military recruitment and the Afghanistan withdrawal during her speech. Following the vote, she shared a video on X, previously known as Twitter, and maintained that “there’s a loss in confidence in Lloyd Austin’s leadership and he deserves to be fired.”

The current annual salary for Austin, who holds the distinction of being the first Black Secretary of Defense, is upwards of $221,000 as reported by Defense News. Greene explained that her amendment leverages the Holman rule, which “allows amendments to appropriations legislation that would reduce the salary of or fire specific federal employees, or cut a specific program,” as stated by the House Rules Committee.

Greene’s amendment is set to be incorporated into the defense spending bill. However, she conveyed to the Washington Examiner that despite the amendment’s integration, she intends to vote against the bill due to the inclusion of extra aid to Ukraine, a point of contention among other conservative lawmakers as well.

In response to the development, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh communicated to The New York Times that Austin “is focused on leading the Department of Defense and ensuring our service members worldwide have the resources and support the U.S. military needs to conduct our mission to defend the nation.”

People reacted to the amendment being passed

“How […] can they approve this?” one person asked, with another replying, “Because it’s performative. The Senate won’t pass that provision, and Biden won’t sign a bill that includes it.”

Is it legal

Another questioned whether the amendment was actually lawful, stating, “I’m pretty sure it’s technically illegal. Salaried employees are required to make a certain amount over minimum wage under FLSA, regardless of whether they are government or private sector.”

It’s racist

Another commenter cried racism, saying, “Cutting a black man’s salary to $1 per year… I think that’s called slavery right?”

Some agreed

A person agreed with the aforemented comment, saying, “Still searching for the source where I read it, but some in the GOP also proposed cutting the salary of Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine (a trans woman) to $1. We’re past the dog whistles and even the saying-the-quiet-part-out-loud. They’re just openly discriminating now based on race and gender identity.”

White Nationalist

The sentiment was shared amongst several other American readers, one noting, “Republicanism hate to see a black man, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd James Austin III in that position, because they know he can’t be contorted and manipulated to submit to or to allow a White Nationalist take over of the Military Leadership.”

They want to weaken the military

Some questioned Taylor Green’s motives, saying, “Republicans who voted for such idiotic actions are in conjunction with Tuberville, their objective is to weaken the military and have people in leadership who are partial and submissive to Confederacy Style White Nationalism… so they can try and create their Restructure of Jim Crow 5.0.”

The republican party has surrendered

One person simply noted, “We do not face a Maga problem. The problem we face is that the entire Republican party has surrendered to Maga against their own intelligence and conscience.”

They don’t know what they’re doing

Someone thought the amendment was a joke, writing, “I think it’s time for ‘take a Congress person to work day’. I’d love to watch Taylor Greene spend the day running the world’s biggest military. Just think of all the innovative ideas she’ll bring to keep the homeland secure and in a state of readiness. You know, because of her innovative and sweeping ideas… Oh, wait, I forgot, she’s never served and she’s MTG. My bad.”

The bill will never pass

Others also found the amendment laughable, stating, “The GOP are infamous for passing bills that will never pass the Senate. They know that! What they do is all theater for their moronic masses!!”
