He Got into Trouble for Educating About Black History Month at Work And Now He Wants to Quit

A man recently asked if he was wrong for posting Black history facts on the noticeboard at work during black history month. His manager was condescending and rude, so he’s thinking about quitting. Here’s what he had to say:

His company prides itself on being diverse

The man worked in a bustling wholesale warehouse in Minneapolis when he realized the company he worked for, which supposedly prided itself on being diverse, wasn’t doing anything for Black History Month.

He decided to do it himself

Rather than let the month slide by unacknowledged, he decided to take matters into his own hands, setting up a Black History Fact of the Day in the breakroom.

However, his actions did not go unnoticed. Before the day ended, a manager pulled him aside, expressing her concern.

The manager gave him some rules

“She told me that she wanted to make sure that I was using neutral wording and citing my references because I wouldn’t want to make people uncomfortable in the workplace,” he explained.

Deflated but not defeated, the man decided to continue. He used his own printer, paper, and time to make the posters.

“The next day, the same manager comes up to me with a list she made to ‘help’ me. She wanted to make sure I showed the ‘positive’ side of black history,” he said.

He explained his thoughts

In response, he told her he felt underrepresented, and the posters had the potential to spark a much-needed dialogue and bring people together.

She brought religion into the conversation

She said, “Let me know if I’m crossing a line, but I feel like God puts a hole in every person that can only be filled with Him. So when you catch yourself looking for outside representation, you should look to God instead.”

She gave him a list of allowed historical figures

These figures included athletes like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and others like them. However, the man decided to ignore her list and carry on posting his own facts. He included locally significant facts, such as the story of William Taylor’s barbershop in St. Paul, a known stop on the Underground Railroad.

Despite the end of Black History Month, the man found that the manager was now giving him the silent treatment. He felt like he was constantly under her watchful eye and needed to be on his best behavior.

He asked the internet for advice

He was worried he was losing his mind over this and thinking about quitting his job, so he turned to the internet for help.

People responded

One user said, “Your manager told you to look to God. Report her to HR. You are walking on eggshells anyhow, and there is a chance they will address her inappropriate behavior.”

Another user said, “A good manager in 2023 would’ve expressed appreciation for your efforts and certainly wouldn’t have told you to look to God in lieu of diversity.”
