He Had Two Spare Parking Spots, but When a Neighbor’s Tenant Kept Parking Across Both of Them, He Wanted to Start Charging Her for the Privilege

A man recently went online to ask if he’d been wrong to ask his neighbor’s tenant to start paying rent for the parking space(s) she repeatedly used for free. Here’s his story

“I live in a small apartment building,” the man began. “My apartment is the largest in the building and came with two parking spots included in the rent instead of one.”

He was settled

My roommate used the spots until she moved out last fall. I decided to keep the apartment and just live alone. I know all my neighbors, and it’s generally a very friendly building.”

The man explained that he didn’t drive himself, so unless he had visitors who drove, the two spots stayed empty.

A few months ago, the man noticed a car was constantly parking in one of his spots. He soon found out that it belonged to a neighbor’s new tenant.

He got to the bottom of it

His neighbor had started renting her spare room out, and as her apartment only had one parking space, her tenant had taken to parking in one of the man’s spots because “it was always empty.”

It was fine by him

The man initially didn’t mind so much. The tenant was only staying for two months, and he almost never needed both spaces. If he ever did, he could always just ask the woman to move.

But three months later, the woman’s car was still there. What’s more, the winter snow and ice had covered the edges of the spaces, and the woman had taken to parking across both of them to fit her car in.

The man pointed out that he paid more in rent than his neighbor and tenant, partly because of the extra parking space. He could afford it, but he’d also been toying with the idea of renting one of his spaces out to a nearby office worker (a common practice near where he lived, as parking spots were at a premium).

The man also considered asking the woman to pay a little for the spot each month, but he felt awkward doing so because she’d gotten used to using it for free. He also wasn’t sure if she could afford it.

He asked the internet

Although he didn’t need the money, the man was conflicted because it was a matter of principle. He asked the online community for their thoughts.

The internet responded

“You’re not wrong in the slightest,” said one. “You are paying for these spots. Give someone an inch, and they’ll take a mile.”

“You have let them use it for free and were told it was a short-term thing,” observed another. “They’re still using the spot, being inconsiderate, and using both spots. To me, this ends any goodwill you need to have.”
