He Made Millions by Investing His Inheritance While His Cousins Spent Theirs, but When He Refused Their Demands for Handouts, They Threatened to Sue

A man recently reached out for some advice because his cousins thought he’d scammed them out of their grandparents’ inheritance. Here’s what happened.

She moved in next door

When the man was little, a young widow, “J”, moved in next door. The man’s parents took her under their wing.

The man said, “Dad helped around her house, and Mom always cooked extra for her.”

She loved him like a son

The man and J got along well, and she treated him like her own son.

His grandparents loved her

Even the man’s extended family loved J, especially his father’s parents. They even made her executor of their will.

This made sense, as J had studied pre-law and business. She had a good head for money and legal requirements.

Everything was split equally

The will was made to be as fair as possible because his grandparents didn’t want any fighting after they were gone.

They sold everything

The plan was to give a few specific items to the man’s father and his siblings, sell everything else, and split the money between the seven grandchildren.

It went according to plan

J was a great executor. After everything was sold, she handed a $100,000 check to each grandchild.

They paid off debts

Since the man was the youngest cousin, he didn’t have much to spend his money on. His cousins, however, used most of their inheritance to pay off debts and buy houses.

J had an idea

J suggested the man invest his money. His parents agreed that it made sense, and J took the money to invest.

She gave the same advice

J offered the same advice to the other cousins, but they weren’t interested.

They had an early Christmas

A few years later, when everyone got together for an early Christmas, the man had something exciting to tell them. “I got on to the Harvard Business program, and I excitedly shared the news,” he said.

They asked about scholarships

The family were thrilled. They asked if he’d gotten a scholarship because it was an expensive program.

He didn’t need a scholarship

The man said he didn’t need any scholarships; he had enough money to pay himself.

It was his investment

He explained that J’s investment advice had turned his $100,000 into $3 million in just six years.

The calls started the next day

Within 24 hours, the man was getting calls from his cousins asking for money.

They thought it was a scam

No one believed that the money J had invested could be worth that much; they thought the man had received more than his share of the inheritance, and they wanted some of it.

They threatened to sue

The cousins were so angry that they even threatened to sue. He said, “Mom wants me to give a little bit to others to avoid the drama, but I don’t want to.”

Was he wrong?

Was the man wrong to ignore his cousin’s requests for money, or was he right because it wasn’t their money in the first place?

The internet responded

One person said, “Give them nothing. You all had the same opportunities; you were just wiser with yours by investing.”

Another person commented, “You have no obligation to share that money with them, and you did nothing wrong by investing it.”
