He Paid His Wife’s $10,000 Credit Card Bill, but When He Wanted to Treat Himself to a New Gaming Console, She Demanded a Gift Too

A man recently went online to ask if he was wrong to have refused to buy something for his wife after he used most of his work bonus to pay off her five-figure debt. Here’s his story.

They’d been married awhile

“My 28-year-old wife and I have been married for six years,” the 30-year-old began. “I’ve always been a breadwinner, while she hasn’t worked for three years.”

“The company she worked at went bankrupt, and then Covid made it hard for her to get a job in her field. Our first child was born a year ago, so she became a stay-at-home mom. She’s great at it and does a lot of the childcare. I’m involved at night, but she does everything when I’m at work.”

He had it all organized

The man explained their financial setup. They had a joint account for household expenses; the woman had a personal account, and he had a separate savings account. He paid $100 per week into his wife’s account, which she usually spent on clothes.

His wife also had a credit card debt that he hadn’t been involved in running up. As she was no longer working, he was helping her to pay it off.

When the man got a huge bonus from work, he used most of it to pay off the remainder of his wife’s credit card, which came to $10,000.

It was time to treat himself

With what he had left, the man decided he’d like to treat himself to a new PS5. Out of politeness, he asked his wife if that was okay.

Her response confused him.

“Do I get to buy something too?” she asked. He didn’t get it; he’d just paid off her five-figure debt. What’s more, she’d lavished her previous week’s allowance on an expensive pair of boots.

Not wanting to buy her anything but also not wanting a confrontation, the man said, “Forget about it; I won’t get the PS5.”

She accused him

The man revealed that his wife was now angry with him, telling him that he’d “rather make them both miserable” than treat her to a gift. She said it wasn’t fair, and when he pointed out that he rarely, if ever treated himself, she said, “You buy food when you’re at work, so it balances out.”

Who was wrong?

Wondering if he was being selfish or if his wife was acting spoiled and entitled, he asked the online community for their thoughts.

The internet responded

The internet backed the man. “Your wife did get a present: you paid off her $10,000 credit card debt,” said one. “That’s about 20 PS5s.”

“It sounds like you do an excellent job providing for your family, saving for the future, and handling the finances,” said another. “Not many people are capable of doing that! You really have earned a reward and should buy yourself the PS5.”
