He Was Disappointed that His Daughter Chose an English Degree and Therefore Refused to Pay for It

A father recently had a huge argument with his daughter after he told her he wouldn’t pay for her university degree. The reason? She decided to study English and not a medical degree like her brothers.

His Reasoning?

She’s studying English, and that’s not what he had in mind for her.

Here’s what he had to say.

Her Parents Were Happy

The 57-year-old man and his wife were overjoyed when they learned that their 21-year-old daughter, Jane, had been accepted into the university of her choice.

Their happiness, however, didn’t last long as they found out that Jane was going to study English.

Jane’s decision to apply for university came later than her two brothers, Mark (28) and Leo (30).

When her parents had encouraged her to apply at the age of 18, Jane insisted that she wasn’t ready and wanted to take a “little rest.”

She Spent a Year Travelling

This break entailed going out with friends and traveling for an entire year with her boyfriend. Her father generously provided all the financial support needed for Jane’s gap year.

Although Jane’s parents had no objections to her taking time off to explore and experience life, they made her promise that when she finally applied to university, it would be for a degree with practical value.

This was because before her gap year, Jane was going through a phase where she was drawn to various creative pursuits, and her parents worried she might stick to it.

A year later, Jane’s parents were then surprised to find out that she had gone behind their backs and applied for an English degree!

Jane’s brothers, both of whom had pursued medical degrees and become successful, well-paid doctors, had expected her to follow a similar path.

Instead, Jane had decided to be true to herself and pursue her own interests.

Her Father Had a Different View

The father decided to have a heart-to-heart conversation with Jane about her choice.

He told her that if she went through with the English degree, he would not support her financially, and she would have to take out her own student loan.

Jane was devastated by this ultimatum, and she began crying, accusing her father of favoritism toward her brothers and calling him the “worst dad ever.”

Jane’s brothers believed that their father was being too harsh and that he should support Jane regardless of her chosen degree.

The father, a cardiologist, argued that his reluctance to support her decision wasn’t based on sexism but on his desire for Jane to pursue a more practical degree that would enable her to be financially self-sufficient in the long run.

He Had Doubts About Her Choice

He also expressed uncertainty about whether Jane’s decision was rooted in genuine passion or merely an attempt to rebel against him.

He Had Spent Much More on His Sons’ Education

Despite the father’s concerns, it’s important to consider that the cost of Jane’s gap year did not come close to the amount spent on her brothers’ tuition fees.

One user said, “YTA. If it was because you paid an equal amount to her travels as her brother’s education, I would say no, but because she chose a degree you “disapprove” of, you are punishing her.”

Another said, “I have an English degree and have spent nearly 30 years making a very good living as a technical writer. Have NO IDEA where OP is coming from that he thinks an English degree is 1) creative and 2) not valuable.”
