He Was Horrified When His Dog Attacked His Neighbor’s Cat, but He Was Even More Shocked When They Asked Him to Pay Their Vet Bills

A man recently wrote online about how his neighbor’s cat snuck into his house via the doggy door. His husky attacked the creature, but it survived. However, when the neighbors expected him to pay the vet bill, he refused. Here’s what he had to say.

The man wrote, “My backyard is completely fenced in with a six-feet-high metal fence, and so is my neighbor’s. I have a three-year-old husky; they have a cat.”

“My dog has had full access to my backyard through the use of a doggy door for two years now, and we’ve had no issue before,” he added. “Every now and then, my neighbor’s cat would be sitting on top of the fence, and my dog would bark at it, but the cat would run off. Not really an issue.”

The neighbor’s cat came through the man’s doggy door one day. His husky pounced quickly and attacked the cat. The man got there as fast as he could, scooped up the cat, and took it to his neighbors.

His neighbors didn’t have a car, so he drove them to the vet. The cat was hurt, but he would be okay.

After the vet gave the all-clear, he drove the neighbor home. While he was saying goodbye, his neighbor asked about medical expenses. He told them he had pet insurance for his dog but couldn’t pay for theirs.

At fault

His neighbors said he needed to pay for the trip to the vet because it was his dog, so he was at fault. But the man replied that he wasn’t sure he was at fault because the cat trespassed into his home.

His neighbors were furious and tossed a few insults his way. He snapped back and said, “I’m not paying for your cat’s medical bills. Forget it,” and he walked away.

He installed an electronic doggy gate to ensure no repeats of the incident. But he fears the damage may be done.

Was he right to refuse to pay?

The man felt he was right not to pay. However, his neighbor’s reaction gave him pause. He wrote to an online forum to get a second opinion.

One poster said, “I love cats—I have three myself—but this cat came into your home. They should just be thankful that their cat is alive. That’s what happens when people let their cats roam around the neighborhood; you run the risk of your cat getting hurt.”

While another declared, “You know that if their pet damaged your pet, they would do the same thing. While your dog did damage their cat, the cat was not only in your yard, but it also came into your house. Cat people need to learn to contain their cats. A basic fence is not enough, and in the city, it’s probably better to be an inside cat.”
