Her Family Won’t Take Her Seriously and Always Involve Her Mom Even Though She’s a Grown Woman and She’s Sick of It

A 28-year-old woman from Texas, who recently welcomed her second child, received a personalized pillowcase from her aunt and uncle. However, she was disheartened to discover that the package was addressed to her mother, not her. Here’s what she had to say.

Her family wasn’t close

As a child, the woman believed she was close to her mother’s side of the family, but as she grew older, she realized that they did not seem to care about her as much as she initially thought.

They only spoke to her mom

“Up until last year, we all lived in Iowa within 30 minutes of each other. So if there was a holiday that they were hosting, they would invite my mom and expect her to invite me instead of reaching out to me themselves,” the woman said.

It continued into adulthood

This pattern persisted even after her mother moved to California. The woman’s cousins, who are over ten years older than her, followed the same practice, inviting her mother to their children’s events and expecting her to pass along the invitation.

She didn’t know why

The woman was unsure if her family still viewed her as the baby of the family or if they simply did not want her around, although they were always nice to her during family gatherings.

This was too much

“Getting this package that has absolutely nothing to do with my mom (who again lives three states away from me) yet was addressed to her just seems like the last straw to me.”

She wants to return it

The woman is now considering sending the package back to her aunt and uncle with a letter expressing her feelings.

She doesn’t want a reminder

She acknowledged that the personalized gift could not be returned, but she didn’t want to keep it as a reminder of her family’s apparent lack of care for her.

The family knew

The woman noted that both she and her mother had informed her family that they could reach out to her directly, but they continued to direct questions about her, her husband, and their children to her mother instead.

She’s had enough

Is She Overreacting?

The woman knows that it may not seem like a big thing, but she’s so fed up with the way her family is treating her. Nevertheless, she reached out to the internet and asked if she was wrong.

People Responded

One user said, “Honestly, I am not going to judge you, but I think you are overreacting to send the gift back. Send them a thank you note addressed to their mom.”

Another said, “How old is your aunt/uncle/whoever addressed the package? Could it have been a slip of the mind? She meant to write your name but wrote your mom’s. I have an aunt who calls me by my mom’s name at least 50% of the time – it’s not malicious. My mom and aunt are getting older, and she has over a dozen nieces and nephews to keep straight.”
