Her Husband Cheated on Her and Left Her, But When He Suddenly Passed Away, Her Ex-Mother-in-Law Shockingly Moved Closer

A woman recently found out that the mother of her ex-partner is moving back to the area after moving away many years ago. She is now concerned about her former mother-in-law becoming involved in her daughter’s life.

The woman, who is in her forties, was left stunned about six years ago when her now-ex-partner, who was also in his forties, left her and their daughter, Zoe, to move to another country with a woman he’d been having an affair with. The woman’s mother-in-law was “initially sympathetic,” but when her son’s partner got pregnant, she moved to join them.

At the time, the woman’s daughter, Zoe, felt betrayed, as she had lost her father and grandma at the same time. Her father went on to have another child with his partner, but sometimes during school holidays, Zoe would go and visit him. The woman eventually remarried a man who, along with his family, “adores Zoe,” and they moved states.

“My ex passed away in 2021, which was devastating for all of us,” she said. “Initially, my mother-in-law stayed on to support her young grandsons and my ex’s poor grieving wife. But, without my ex there, there are some immigration and visa issues, so she’s ‘choosing’ to move back to the US.”

Eventually, the woman’s ex-mother-in-law contacted them, noting that she had decided to move to her state despite having no other connections there. The woman explained that, while she would happily invite her to birthdays and other special events, they are quite busy now, and Zoe is nearing her teenage years, which is something that should be considered.

Soon enough, the woman’s ex-mother-in-law started talking about “wanting to spend a lot more one-on-one time” with the woman’s daughter. She told her ex-mother-in-law, quite frankly, that she had lost the right to demand such a thing when she moved away. Once more, she highlighted Zoe’s age, noting that her opinion was probably not going to change.

The woman’s ex-mother-in-law noted that she was grieving and wanted to be near her late son’s daughter. The woman pointed out that she had “all but abandoned Zoe, just as her son had,” and that she simply couldn’t expect to pick up from where she left off. The step-grandparents of her daughter currently play a role in her life that the mother-in-law had left vacant.

The woman explained to her ex-mother-in-law that she could move wherever she wanted but noted that she shouldn’t bank on a relationship with Zoe. This made her “very upset” and led to her accusing the woman of trying to “erase” any links Zoe has to her father or his family, pointing out that she was alienating her from her grandchild.

“She’s upset that I told Zoe, in passing, that she was having visa issues months ago because it interferes with her ‘I’m coming back just for you’ narrative,” she said. “The truth is, I’ve always made sure that Zoe is civil, but even before my ex died, I hadn’t done much to encourage Zoe to deepen the relationship with her grandma.”

The woman hasn’t told her daughter

While the woman has informed Zoe that her grandmother is moving back, she has not yet told her daughter that she wants to be near them. Zoe has “complex feelings” toward her half-siblings and stepmother, and was devastated knowing her grandmother gave them all the love she used to give her.

The woman is unsure if it would be healthy for her daughter to see her ex-mother-in-law, as she does not feel that she can be “trusted to stick around” if she’s offered somewhere better.

The internet responded

One person said, “Zoe is not an accessory that can be shoved to the back of a drawer and then pulled back out whenever her grandmother wants.”

Another commenter noted, “It wasn’t your responsibility to deepen the relationship with her grandma. She had a father who could’ve done that, and he chose not to.”
