Her Neighbors Insisted She Stop Doing Laundry After 9 PM Due to Excessive Noise And She Thinks It’s Unreasonable

A woman recently turned to the Reddit community asking for advice on a neighbor who demanded that she stop doing her laundry after 9 pm. She didn’t think it was fair, but should she comply?

The Problem

Her neighbors had complained about the noise from her washing machine and made several other complaints which she rectified. This time though, she felt they took it too far and didn’t deserve further consideration.

She Never Got Complaints Before

The woman had been living in a top-floor flat in the UK for about ten years. It wasn’t until the new neighbors moved in that anyone ever complained about the noise from her washing machine.

At Christmas, she visited her family. When she returned home, she found a note from the new downstairs neighbors. They said the washing machine was ‘shaking their apartment,’ and left a rubber shock-absorbing mat for her to put under the washing machine.

She Apologized

They also left their phone numbers, so the woman texted them to apologize. They accepted the apology, and all was well, the woman thought. She lives alone, so she doesn’t make a lot of noise. However, she does have a dog.

“I have a rather active dog. She doesn’t run around the flat much, but she does bark when the door opens or if she hears other dogs outside. Other than that, she just bounces the odd tennis ball,” the woman said.

A month after receiving the first note, she got another message from the downstairs neighbors asking her to stop her dog from playing around with rubber dogs. She knew the balls were heavy, so she decided to be a good neighbor and put them aside.

She Did What They Asked

After all, the downstairs couple had a right to complain if she was being too noisy, and it wasn’t a big deal. The woman complied with the downstairs neighbors’ request, and again, she thought all was well.

They Kept Complaining

But it wasn’t, and the messages kept flooding in. “A few days later, the same thing happened regarding tennis balls. A week after, when my friend visited with her dog, I got another message about a dog thumping and running around,” she said.

Her friend left by 8 pm, and the woman decided to hang out at her friend’s house next time to prevent any more complaints.

Things Seemed Better But…

The woman had no issues with the downstairs neighbor for nine months, but that was because they were away traveling. As soon as they returned, the messages resumed, and now they started to get ridiculous.

They Asked Her to Quiet the Dog

“Last month, my dog started barking one night because she heard something outside. Of course, my neighbors texted me to get her to stop barking. So, I had to keep her in my room to discourage her from doing so, and it worked,” she said.

Then They Asked Her Not to Do Laundry

She then got another message regarding the noise from her washing machine. He told her not to do any washing after 10 pm. While she was still trying to figure out how to handle this request, she got yet ANOTHER message from him. This time around, he asked her not to wash her clothes after 9.30 pm.

She Felt They Were Being Unreasonable

At this point, she felt that the neighbors were being ridiculous and taking advantage of her kindness. Ironically, they had also gotten a dog that barked a lot at night, but the woman never complained about it.

She Was Worried that They’d Keep Pushing

“I believe that in the UK, night hours are between 11 pm and 7 am. Now that they have my number, I am worried that they keep making the time they deem acceptable for washing much earlier,” she said.

She decided that she would continue to do her laundry after 9 pm. She couldn’t accommodate all her neighbors’ requests, and sometimes it was simply more convenient to do her laundry at night. Besides, all the apartments had poor insulation, so the washing machine was always going to make noise. “I’m willing to bet that their washing machine is doing the same to their neighbors downstairs,” she said.

The Woman Asked for Advice

One user said, “People have different schedules and need to do chores in their own free time. You have been accommodating to all their requests, yet they keep pushing. They are becoming unreasonable.”

Another user said, “You are doing what you can, and you’re well within your rights. I suggest you send them a message telling them they have taken it too far, and you will now honor quiet time from 11 pm to 7 am.”
