He’s Been with His Girlfriend for 12 Years but He Doesn’t Wan’t to Be the Dad to Her 12 Year-Old Daughter

A man recently asked if he was wrong for telling people that his girlfriend’s daughter isn’t his real daughter. He has no desire to be a stepdad so he doesn’t think he did anything wrong. Here’s what he had to say.

His Girlfriend Has Kids

The man has been dating his girlfriend, Amy, for 12 years. She’s 35 and has two kids, Anna, 15, and Nick, 18. They’ve lived together for almost nine years, and the kids’ dad isn’t in the picture.

The guy’s been around the kids for most of their lives, but they still think of him as just their stepdad or their mom’s boyfriend. He’s actually not that into kids and doesn’t want to be their dad, so they’re all cool with the way things are.

Anna’s into ice skating and one day had a practice for an upcoming event. He and Amy went to cheer her on. They were sitting there watching her skate with some other parents. Anna starts doing her routine, and they’re both cheering for her.

Another woman suddenly asks if Anna’s their kid, and the guy says, “No, she’s just my girlfriend’s kid.” The woman just says, “oh,” and drops it.

Later, when they get back home, Amy wants to talk to her boyfriend. She tells him that she didn’t really like how he handled that situation and that he could have just said “yes” when asked about Anna.

But the man said, “she’s not really my kid, so I don’t think I did anything wrong.” Now Amy’s upset with him, and he’s wondering if maybe he was in the wrong after all.

He Does Like the Children

The guy doesn’t hate kids, and he actually cares about Anna and Nick. He just doesn’t want kids of his own.

The kids call him by his first name, and when they introduce him to their friends, they say he’s their mom’s boyfriend, not their dad. Neither the kids nor the guy wants him to be their “dad,” and they’re all good with that.

He Reached Out For Advice

One person said, “YTA. I think it’s unbelievably cruel for you to be with Amy for as long as you have been and make no effort to act like a father to these kids. If you’ve been dating for 12 years, that means the kids were 6 and 3 when you first got together.”

Another said, “Keep in mind that as a mom, she needs to look out for the best interest of her children. Why would being with a man who avidly rejects the notion of being their dad be something she’s okay with?”
