His Elderly Neighbors and Their Visitors Repeatedly Blocked His Driveway, but When His Gentle Reminders Fell on Deaf Ears, He Called the Police

A man recently went online to ask if he should have been more patient after he called the police on his elderly neighbors for blocking his driveway over and over again. Here’s his story

Parking was awkward

“I live in an awkwardly shaped cul-de-sac,” the man began. “If you park a certain way near my house—i.e., right in front of it—you’ll block half my driveway.”

He needed the space

“I have a car that sits low by design, and I need the entire width of the driveway so that it doesn’t bottom out.”

They kept blocking him in

The man explained that a few months ago, some new neighbors moved in, two of whom were elderly. The problem was that they repeatedly blocked half of his driveway by parking in front of his house. And if it wasn’t them doing it, it was their visitors or their cleaner. Sometimes it might be just a few minutes, but other times, it could be for hours.

He’d been civil

The man accepted that it was the closest spot for them to park in, but he had politely explained to them many times that it meant he couldn’t get off his drive. There was also ample parking all around the cul-de-sac.

There had been multiple occasions where the man had to ask the same group of visitors to move their car so he could get off his driveway. Every time, he had the same civil conversation with them, but every time, it seemed to go in one ear and out of the other.

It happened again

The previous Sunday, the man had needed to leave quickly, but of course, his neighbors were blocking his driveway. He texted them, asking them to move their car ASAP, and he was direct about them not parking there.

30 minutes later, he’d received no reply. He saw one of their visitors (who he’d spoken to about parking before) and asked them to pass the message on, but they didn’t.

He called the cops

Eventually, he’d had enough, and he called the police.

The police arrived 10 minutes later and informed the man’s neighbors that they were parked illegally and would be cited.

The neighbors moved the offending car, and the man drove off. He said that he’d gotten an evil look from one of them, but although he bore them no malice, he wanted his boundaries to be respected.

Was he wrong?

The man recognized that his neighbors were elderly and that he perhaps should have been more patient. He asked the online community for their take on the situation.

The internet responded

The internet backed the man. “They repeatedly ignored your legitimate requests,” said one. “They got what they deserved.”

“Hopefully this teaches them a lesson, but somehow I doubt it,” said another. “My vote is to be petty—get them towed next time!”
