His In-Laws Demanded an Alcohol Free Wedding for Religious Reasons, But When Half the Wedding Guests Left Early, the Groom Lost His Cool

A newlywed man questioned if he was wrong for yelling at his father-in-law after he was coerced into having a dry wedding, which caused most of his wedding guests to leave early. Here is what he had to say.

He Got Married

Recently, this man got married and went on a three-week honeymoon trip to Europe with his wife. He came back and started working again.

The wedding was possible because his wife’s family paid for everything. While the money his parents saved was used to buy a house.

They Had Religious Differences

His wife’s family followed a religion that doesn’t like alcohol. “The only catch is that my wife’s family are from an anti-alcohol religion. They said they would only pay for a dry wedding, and would only ever come to NY from Utah for that,” he explained.

His wife used to follow that religion, but she doesn’t anymore. However, whenever his wife’s family visited unexpectedly, they acted like they still followed the religion. They avoided drinking, cursing, and going against their beliefs.

But, champagne was allowed at their wedding because his parents paid for it. “I’m not a raging drinker and didn’t wanna get wasted at my wedding anyway, plus my parents got them to at least allow champagne for toasts since they paid for that. We didn’t feel it necessary to mention this on the invites but apparently having an alcohol-free wedding in NY requires notification,” he said.

But during the wedding, his coworkers and some guests left early because it was alcohol-free. They thought the wedding was not in good taste. Those who stayed back were unhappy and complained.

The Guests Were Complaining

Now he didn’t particularly care that people were leaving, but his wife was worried it was a sign of things to come and she was right. More than half of the wedding guests left before the cutting of the cake, and other people expressed their displeasure as well.

He Had an Argument with His Father-in-Law

First, his father-in-law made a comment about how disrespectful everyone leaving was, and that his friends and family reflected poorly on him. At that point, he got angry at him and said that it was because of the forced religion he agreed to follow. He also said that henceforth, he and his wife would not be conforming to religious standards again.

Was He Right?

He also said he would continue to drink and speak the way he actually did in real life. When he returned to work, a co-worker who stayed longer at the wedding accused him of not mentioning that it would be a dry wedding because he knew people would have refused to come. Now he was wondering if his actions were appropriate given the circumstances.

People Online Reacted

Someone said, “They offered to pay, and you accepted the money on the basis that you agreed to their terms. Getting annoyed with them because your guests left because of a decision you made is ridiculous.”

Another person said, “You used them for the money, then tried to act like this was forced on you. You spent 3 weeks in Europe. You could have paid for the wedding yourself. So selfish.”
