His Landlord Raised His Rent Because The Management Company He Used Refused To Pay Him So He Revoked His Lease Agreement And Moved Out

A tenant recently questioned if he was wrong to revoke his lease after his rent was raised because the management company he paid his rent to was keeping money from his landlord. Here is what he had to say.

A Fresh Start in a New City

The man decided to move to a new city for a fresh start. He found a townhouse and signed a one-year lease. He found it odd when he discovered that his security deposit would be used for the last month’s rent and that he had to pay it to a management company.

For most of the year, everything went smoothly in his new home. But then, his water heater broke in the middle of winter! This unexpected problem forced him to stay in a hotel for three nights. He talked to his landlord, and they agreed to lower his rent to make up for the hotel expenses.

He Renewed the Lease

When the man’s lease was up, he decided to renew it for another year at the same rent. But there was a problem. “I was presented with a 1-year extension for the same rent, I signed it and sent it back. I waited about two weeks and hadn’t received the landlord-signed version back, so I inquired with the management company,” he explained.

There Was a Late Rent Dispute

Curious about the missing lease, he inquired with the management company. They explained that the landlord was upset because he believed his rent payments had been consistently late. This was confusing because he knew he had always paid in full and on time.

An Unexpected Request

Then, the management company admitted they were responsible for not delivering the rent to the landlord on time. “I said that wasn’t my problem per the lease, but the management company requested $100 more per month on the extension to compensate for the inconvenience. They said they would send me a new lease reflecting the $100 increase, which they did,” he said.

He Found a Better Place

Instead of accepting the new terms, the man decided to look for a new place. He found a nicer condo in a similar location that cost $75 less per month. He went through the background check process and received a lease to sign.

He Revoked the Previous Lease

Before signing the new lease, he sent a certified letter to both his landlord and the management company, explaining that his previous lease, which he had signed but hadn’t been counter-signed by the landlord, was now revoked. He couldn’t accept their offer because of the counteroffer.

He Made His Move

With about ten days left on his old lease, the landlord and management company started to panic because they couldn’t find a new tenant in time, risking a loss of rental income. But the man stood his ground, saying it was not his problem.

Was He Wrong?

Never Apologizing

He hired a moving company and a cleaning service to ensure that his old home was returned in excellent condition to his landlord. But now he wondered whether he did the right thing, especially since his landlord wanted to raise the rent by $100 a month. So, he asked the internet if he was right to move and revoke the old lease.
