His Mom Is Guilt-Tripping Him About Going to College Despite This Being His Major Opportunity – Should He Stay?

A young man recently asked if it was bad to leave his family to go to college. His mom is making him feel bad about it even though this is his big break. Here’s what he had to say.

He Works Hard

The young man comes from a low-income family, and he’s been working part-time to support his mom and sister. They do make money in other ways, but he contributes substantially because his mum is an illegal immigrant and is not paid properly.

Due to his family’s financial situation, everything was covered. Tuition, room, board, etc.

“This isn’t tied to academic performance and is guaranteed for as long as I attend, so it’s a crazy opportunity,” the guy said.

He can go to a top college for free, which could lead to many more opportunities.

There’s Just One Problem

The college is across the country from where he lives.

“My mom is begging me not to go— my sister is too young to work for a few years, and my mother doesn’t make much, so if I left instead of staying and continuing to support the family, they’d be forced to have an even worse standard of life,” the guy explained.

He told them that he would continue working until the end of summer, but this was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.

It Would Be Great for His Future

He explains that going will hurt them in the short term since this family will have less money, but if he doesn’t go, it will hurt them long term because college will allow him to make a lot more money in the future. This way, he can be far more helpful to his family.

He Also Just Wants to Live His Life

But of course, the guy also just wants to go to college. “I want to learn and live a life vastly different from my mom’s life. I want to be great,” he said.

So He Made His Decision

So he decided that he needed to go and that, yes, it would be hard for his mum and his sister, but he was confident that they’d figure out a way to survive. He will work full-time this summer rather than just part-time, so they have a bit of extra money.

He said, “In two years, my sister will be able to work too, so I’m sure they’ll make it.”

His Mum Thinks He’s Very Selfish

She doesn’t want him to leave her and his 12-year-old sister to struggle, and she’s even guilt-tripping him, telling his sister that their lives will be so much worse without him.

The guy feels guilty, but if he gives up this opportunity, he will end up like his mother, with no education, and regret his decision for the rest of his life.

So he asked people if he was in the wrong, but they all strongly agreed that he needed to go to college.

One user said, “You need to think about your own future. As long as they can survive, it is better that you do you.”

Another wrote, “Please make sure she cannot sabotage this opportunity for you. Even if you don’t think she would, she may decide she is desperate and justify it. Contact your school and set up a safeguard in case she tries something like pretending to be you and withdrawing from the scholarship/school.”
