His Roommate Was Filthy, Lazy, and Hid That He Wasn’t Paying the Bills, but the Man Still Couldn’t Bring Himself to Leave

A man recently sought advice about his nightmare renting scenario. His roommate was messy and lazy, but worse still, he neglected to pay any of the bills despite taking the man’s money, leaving them both facing eviction. Here’s what happened.

The man wrote, “I moved in with my roommate six months ago, and it’s been a nightmare ever since.”

“First off, the house was in horrible condition, which he blamed on his old roommate,” he added. “I’ve been putting money into fixing the place here and there, as I have a decent income and would rather spend the extra than live in gross conditions.”

The man replaced the flooring in one room. However, only a day later, it was stained with grass and mud.

Asking for an explanation

When he confronted his roommate, he apologized, but still just left it there for the man to clean up.

The man cleared the porch area and bought new tables and chairs. However, his roommate soon filled it with trash instead of taking it to the garbage bins.

Again, he confronted the roommate. And once more, he apologized but did nothing about it.

A string of problems

On top of all this, the roommate never cleaned the house. The man did the dishes, cleaned the rest of the house, and even had to flush the toilet after his roommate on occasion.

It got worse

Somehow, that’s not the worst part. His roommate also lied about paying the bills. He let them pile up and didn’t let the man know. He only found out they were $2,000 behind when the eviction notice arrived.

Utilities unpaid

The man had sent the roommate money for utilities, but they went unpaid. Once again, he was the only responsible adult in the house and caught up on the arrears to keep a roof over their heads.

At a loss

The man knew the situation wasn’t sustainable. However, there was one thing that gave him pause. The roommate said he would be left homeless if the man moved out. What’s more, he told him he would have to give his pets away and his child to Child Protection Services.

Should the man leave?

The man was conflicted. He knew he should probably wash his hands of the situation, but he didn’t want to see a family put out on the street. He turned to an online forum to ask for help. He got some interesting replies.

The internet responded

One poster said, “Obviously, no one wants to see kids go to CPS or pets out on the street, but none of this stuff is your problem; if anything, he’s essentially stealing from you. These are his problems to figure out; you can’t solve everyone else’s problems.”

While another replied, “He can’t afford to live there even when you ARE paying his bills. On top of theft, he expects you to support his family as well. He’s going to be a mess with or without you, which is not your problem.”
