20 Hobbies People Make Fun of All The Time

Hobbies can boost mental health, create joy and encourage connection with others. However, some people like to poke fun at those they deem unusual. Someone recently asked, “What is a hobby that gets judged negatively?” Here are the top 20 responses.

Live action role-play

“I literally do live-action replay for money. People may judge me, but at the end of the day, I get paid to kick their butts.”

“I was shunned for a couple of days in the military for comparing a field operation to larping.”

Videogaming

“My fiancé gets mad at me for playing video games, but when we’re on the couch watching a movie or show, she’s scrolling through TikTok the whole time. But of course, I can’t say anything about it.”

I’ve found that as gaming has become more mainstream in the last ten years, it’s become more accepted socially.”

Taxidermy

I used to love taxidermy, even though I wasn’t a hunter and never killed the animals. I gave it up because of all the flack from animal rights people.”

“I’m a taxidermist. I promise I’m just an ordinary grandma that most people can’t believe that’s what I do.”

Furries

I make fun of furries on the regular, but my best friends are furries. They make fun of furries too.”

“Bronies are in the same vein, but so much worse.”

Lockpicking

I liked lockpicking in high school, and that always got people giving me weird looks. I mean, I get it, but I only practiced on the padlock I bought.”

“Yeah, I don’t tell employers/coworkers, landlords, etc.. that I am into lock picking.”

Fan fiction

To anyone that mocks fanfiction writing or fanart, I turn it around on them to say, fanfic writers and artists are literally the ones making content when the original brand isn’t. Lots of fan lore and content has been turned into canonical material for games or shows or what have you. Overwatch, for example, had such a desert of lore content when it first came out, and who made it more interesting and in-depth? Fanfic writers and fan artists.”

“Also, many award-winning authors started writing fanfiction. Naomi Novik still does it regularly.”

Thrift shopping

It’s getting some heat right now because some people buy and resell for profit. Personally, I have no problem with this. Thrift stores often end up bursting at the seams, and there’s enough for everyone.”

“Agreed. I was talking to someone about thrifting because I like to, and they wanted to know why I did because my family is ‘well off’ and doesn’t need to. Thrifting is for everyone, and there’s enough to go around.”

Target shooting

“Definitely target shooting, 70% of the time I bring it up, I receive weird looks.”

I wasn’t aware that these are judged negatively. I belonged to a pistol club where I used to live, and we had all kinds of competitive events. I love target shooting, although I don’t like competing, personally, since I wasn’t nearly as good as others.”

Poker

It’s technically a skill-based game in the long run, but people who don’t play poker see it as complete gambling, and that’s not a good hobby (based on other people).”

“True. I’ve read people who say that professional poker players are gambling addicts. Still, really, compulsive gamblers tend to take big risks, usually on games of pure chance (that’s how they get the rush), and things like poker don’t really attract that kind of behavior as much.”

Hunting

Hunting gets so much flack from people who don’t understand it and say hunting for food is fine, but sport is not. However, with the exception of varmints, it’s pretty much universally illegal to shoot a game animal and not use the meat. That is called wanton waste.”

“I think most people think about hunters as in they’re doing it for fun, taking enjoyment out of killing an animal and just go around and shoot stuff… In reality, I would really, really like hundred of pounds of elk meat for the next year.”

Pole dancing

I had an ex-girlfriend who did this for fitness and did a few competitions. It was the kind of hobby that I found very easy to be supportive of – especially when she invited me to attend her competitions. It wasn’t a lewd thing at all, people had parents and friends show up for support.”

Yup, had a colleague who did that for a hobby.”

Dumpster diving

Some people are absolute pigs when diving. They pull out bags and rip them open and leave garbage in the parking lots, etc. That is really a problem. Many divers check for recalls before consuming food items. I tend just to compost any produce I find. Cops pulling guns would sure take the fun out of diving. That’s terrible.”

I’ve seen videos of people getting mad at people going through the dumpster. Why? You DID throw it out.. and now you want it?”

Martial arts

There’s a certain age where being a beginner in a martial art goes from cool to uncool. Then if you become good at it, it becomes cool again at any age.”

“Oh yeah, that’s a really good point. And the real kicker (pun not intended) is that it’s legitimately harder to find martial arts classes that aren’t specifically for kids. Like, as if you want to continue taekwondo as an adult, right?”

Horses

There’s a big ‘horse girl’ stereotype has made me almost nervous to tell guys I’m dating about it, but I’ve decided to let them just see me for myself, and if they want to judge me based on this, then they aren’t the type of person I want to be with anyway.”

“It’s seen as a kind of weird hobby for guys as well, especially if you did English style like I did. A lot of people will think you are gay or something for doing English-style horse riding.”

Drag

It’s a regular performance art, like any other. It’s currently being loudly demonized because it’s adjacent to gay culture.”

“Drag isn’t sexual in nature. It can be sexual, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s literally a man (usually) playing a female character. They can pretend to be a funny, engaging person that makes kids laugh, a stand-up comedy person, a stripper, a ballet dancer, a singer, etc.”

Fishing

Fishing and/or boats gets treated as this redneck hobby for conservatives when like literally every poor coastal culture does it and probably more than white people in the states. Some of my most cherished memories with my dad are fishing on his boat, and I’m fully Hispanic. He also did engine repair for a while, and the vast majority of his clients were Cubans or Puerto Ricans.”

Skateboarding

People think you’re some kind of no good, especially the cops.”

“Could probably say the same thing about rollerblading, and even skaters hate them.”

Anime

This is a big one. I do see people saying, ‘It’s okay to like anime now!’ But I don’t think those people see how much stick we get. Especially from other anime ‘fans.’

It’s one of those hobbies that is more mainstream, but you still have to be careful who you tell. Either for being judged or simply having another fan start sharing dumb opinions or worse ‘ironically’ mock you for it.”

Metal detecting

My instinctual assumptions of a person with a metal detector is, ‘They’re probably retired, doing it for fun, and any metal they detect is a nice bonus.’ I guess that’s a negative stereotype.”

“I was part of a group that did a lot of metal detecting on mountain trails in Japan. We’d very often find old coins, but even more often would find pull tabs and bottle caps. I jokingly considered metal detecting to be cleaning up junk off the trails.”

Bird watching

I love watching my birds, and I’m actually sitting in my chair by my feeders now. I feel like it is always judged as an old person’s hobby. I loved it even as a child.”

“I love birdwatching, I get teased mercilessly by my family, but it’s really helped my mental health.”
