25 Hobbies That People Admit to But Others Think Are “Just Weird”

We all have hobbies and interests that bring us happiness and satisfaction, such as reading, hiking, or playing video games. However, certain hobbies, although harmless or uncommon, have faced strong criticism from others. A recent internet survey asked, “What is a hobby that gets judged negatively?” and here are the top 25 answers.

“it looks so fun, but many local groups exclude women.”

“I was shunned for a couple of days in the military for comparing a field op to larping.”

“I always found taxidermists a bit stuffy.”

“Came here to say that. I used to love taxidermy, even though I wasn’t a hunter and never killed animals. I gave it up because of all the flack from animal rights zealots.”

Furries

“When I think about furries, all that comes to mind is mental issues and deep-rooted trauma.”

“My best bud had this huge collection of Warhammer 40K figures that he is assembling and painting. Every time I go over there, he shows me the progress he’s made. I don’t know anything about Warhammer, but I think what he’s doing is pretty cool. Also, watching him get excited about it makes me happy.”

“They are ACTION FIGURES, not dolls!! Also, just recently saw an article where I found out that Leonardo DiCaprio is a collector!!! Dude is swimming in puthy, and he collects them too.”

Fan Fiction Writing

“Fan fic writer here. I don’t mention it to people.”

“To anyone that mocks fanfiction writing or fanart, I turn it around on them to say, fanfic writers and artists are literally the ones making content when the original brand isn’t. Lots of fan lore and content has been turned into canonical material for games or shows or what have you.”

Thrift Shopping

“It’s getting some heat right now because some people buy and resell for profit.”

“My sister runs a store in NYC and does this. At first, she would buy thrift store clothes to remake them into other clothes and breathe new life into them. But she crossed a line when we were in Rhode Island and found handmade winter hats at a thrift store for 4$ each. She bought ALL of them with the plan to resell them for 25$ each.”

Target Shooting

“I wasn’t aware that these are judged negatively. I belonged to a pistol club where I used to live, and we had all kinds of competitive events. I love target shooting, although I don’t like competing, personally, since I wasn’t nearly as good as others.”

“Definitely gets a bad rap, plus if you own more than one, you’ve been deemed a gun nut. To me, going to the range and hitting the target you aim at gives you a stress relief that modern chemistry can’t mimic.”

Poker

“I’m surprised no one mentioned but poker. It’s technically a skill-based game in the long run, but people who don’t play poker see it as complete gambling, and that’s not a good hobby (based on other people).”

Hunting

“Because it’s weird to kill for fun. Sociopathic. For food? Sure. For fun? Psychotic.”

“Just because you can kill something doesn’t mean you should. I don’t see the sport in it, even if it’s a challenge. There are other ways to have fun that don’t involve hurting something else.”

Pole Dancing

“I had an ex-girlfriend who did this for fitness and did a few competitions. It was the kind of hobby that I found very easy to be supportive of – especially when she invited me to attend her competitions. It wasn’t a lewd thing at all, people had parents and friends show up for support, etc. – but it also just lots of beautiful (mostly) women showing off their grace and athleticism.”

Horses

“There’s a big “horse girl”‘ stereotype has made me almost nervous to tell guys I’m dating about it, but I’ve decided to let them just see me for myself, and if they want to judge me based on this, then they aren’t the type of person I want to be with anyway.”

Comic Book Collecting/Reading

“Since all the blockbuster movies, the attempts at shaming are finally gone. Also, I never bothered and enjoyed some good stories BEFORE they were on the screen. Dark Knight, Watchmen, Phoenix Saga, Swamp Thing, Kingdom Come, Sutur Saga.”

Fishing

“Fishing and/or boats gets treated as this redneck hobby for conservatives when like literally every poor coastal culture does it and probably more than white people in the states.”

“I feel that. I personally can’t afford a motor boat but I kayak fish and always feel embarrassed to say I fish because I’m afraid people are going to think I’m a racist republican.”

“People think it’s a rich person’s game and that golf courses use too much water and take up space that could be used for a park or something.”

Anime

“This is a big one. I do see people saying, “It’s okay to like anime now!” But I don’t think those people see how much crap we catch. Especially from other anime “fans.”

“It’s one of those hobbies that is more mainstream, but you still have to be careful who you tell. Either for being judged or simply having another fan start sharing dumb opinions or, worse, “ironically,” mock you for it.”

Model Trains

“I get harped on for loving model trains because only senile old men love that anymore, lol.”

Lifting Weights

“In my experience, it’s not so much that they look down upon weight lifting itself as it’s the negative assumptions people make about you. A common example is people assuming you are vain/shallow.”

Driving a Sports Car

“Everyone on Reddit, in particular, assumes owning a fun vehicle means you drive recklessly, do burnouts, street race, and rev your engine to the moon in a residential neighborhood all night long.”
