Man Is at Wits End After Non-Paying Tenant Still Refuses to Pay Even Though He Got His Dream Job Promotion

A man turned to the Reddit community for advice after facing a situation where a tenant, who had been living in his home without paying rent, refused to start paying once he secured his dream job.

He’d Been Helping Someone Out

The homeowner had been helping the tenant out by waiving the rent on the condition that the tenant would start paying rent as soon as he secured his promotion. But, after he landed the job, he refused to pay what the homeowner deemed a fair price.

The man, who owns his own home, kindly let the guy live in his house for free while he tried to land his dream job.

The Tenant Started Hinting

However, only a week after the tenant got the job, he started reminding the homeowner that he was taking a pay cut for this position and implying that, despite his promises, he still couldn’t afford to pay rent.

It Was a Great Room

The homeowner described the room, as “huge, with a private bath, private balcony, two closets, and another walk-in closet. There’s central air and heat, the fastest internet my address can get, two outdoor spaces. and a laundry room. The flooring is brand new.”

The Tenant Had Promised

The homeowner and the tenant had agreed that rent payments would start as soon as the tenant got his new job. The tenant had repeatedly assured him, “once I get this job, I can pay rent like a normal tenant, no problem.”

When the tenant finally landed the job he’d been talking about, the homeowner informed him that the rent would be $1,350 with internet and utilities included. Surprisingly, the tenant balked at the price.

He Even Offered a Deal

Trying to be understanding, the homeowner offered an alternative: three months at $1,000 per month followed by nine months at $1,350 per month, all utilities included. The tenant still refused, arguing that he had to buy a $15,000 used Prius.

The Tenant Debated

The homeowner said, “I encouraged him to buy a cheaper car and widen the brands and models he’s considering, but he refuses because a Prius with specific options is his “perfect car.” I have never spent that much on a car. Because I own a home, he acts like I must be rich.”

It’s a Great Location

The homeowner’s house was located just a mile west of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. In 2012, his tenants had paid $1,250 per month, so he had only increased the rent by $100 in 11 years. The man had worked tirelessly to buy and maintain the house, putting in 80-100+ hours a week throughout his 20s.

He knew that the tenant couldn’t find a private room with a private bath anywhere near the area for the price he was offering. The only cheaper option nearby was a dormitory-style house with four adults sharing one bedroom for $750.

The Man Is Shocked

The homeowner said, “I do think that’s outrageous and believe what I’m offering is more than fair. I feel like telling him: if you think you can find a better deal, then do it.”

He’s Questioning Himself

The tenant acted as if the homeowner was being unreasonable, and this left the man questioning if he was in the wrong for demanding a fair rental price.

The Man Reached out To the Internet

One user responded, “Time to give him his 30-day notice. He’s welcome to prioritize his car purchase, but not at the homeowner’s expense.”

A third commented, “NTA. You’re charging him less than the market rate already. You already gave him a great deal by allowing him to live rent-free, and he wants more. You helped him out when he needed it, but it’s not your responsibility to continue subsidizing him indefinitely.”
