She Accidentally Scratched a Car Parked on The Sidewalk and Now the Car Owner Is Demanding that She Pay for The Damage

A young woman recently found herself in a predicament. As she was struggling to navigate past a car parked on the sidewalk with her pram, she unintentionally scratched it. Now, the car’s owner demands payment for the damage, but she believes she shouldn’t be held responsible.

She was out for a walk

The 31-year-old woman was recently on her daily walk with her 5-month-old son and dog. She usually took the same route, and that day was no different.

There were a lot of cars

As she approached a corner of the street, she noticed there were more cars than usual parked along the street and onto the pavement.

“These cars were half on the pavement with barely enough room to push my stroller and definitely not enough room for a wheelchair, for example,” the woman said.

She squeezed past a car

While pushing her stroller , it was a tight squeeze between her and the cars. However, she got stuck at the last car and forced her stroller through the gap. It couldn’t have been too hard, as her baby was still asleep afterward.

Someone yelled

Suddenly, she heard a shout, “Oi!” She turned to see a man who had come out of a nearby house, accusing her of scratching his car.

She asked where, and he pointed out some scuffs along his wheel arch. She responded, “Well, you shouldn’t be parked on the pavement. It’s illegal, and there must be enough room for wheelchairs, prams, etc.”

He demanded she pay

The man started shouting aggressively, demanding that she pay for the scratches. She told him he couldn’t expect her to push her baby into a busy road because he wanted to park on a footpath. Refusing to be shouted at in front of her son, she started name-calling him and walked away.

She felt a bit bad

“I do feel bad for scratching his car. It was a ’22 plate Kia. I’m assuming brand new. It wasn’t intentional at all, but still, don’t park on the pavement,” the woman said.

Her partner understood the anger

Upon returning home, her partner suggested that she could have knocked on the man’s door and asked him to move it. He said that although he wouldn’t have gotten aggressive, he understood why the man was annoyed about his car being damaged.

Was she in the wrong?

The woman, therefore, asked if she was wrong for scratching the car and refusing to give her details to pay for the damages.

People responded

One user said, “NTA, you didn’t intentionally scratch it. You squeezed past an illegally parked vehicle that was causing an obstruction. Imagine him going to his insurance. “And this damage happened when it was parked where? End of.”

Another noted, “NTA. Parking half on the path is illegal, and not leaving room for prams and wheelchairs is just rude. He took the risk of parking like an idiot. Scratching his car was an accident. That’s what his insurance is for. Next time maybe he will be more thoughtful. Don’t feel bad. The safety of your baby is far more important than a lazy, ignorant driver.
