She Found Racist Messages on Her Friend’s Phone so Decided to Cut All Ties

A teenager recently decided to end her friendship with two of her friends because she found racist texts on their phone. She’s not sure she did the right thing as the friends’ just lost their dad so should she have been more considerate?

“My friends Lisa and Layla are twin sisters. We had been friends for over ten years, and our relationship was good,” said the young woman. “They were the pretty blonde white girls who were so kind as to guide me through school and defend me from bullies and racists.”

And she really needed their help during those tough high-school years. The girl is an unusual ethnic mix (she’s Native Hawaiian and Arab), so she is an easy target for bullies. Her background meant she formed close friendships with other kids in the same situation. They included a nice guy called Andrew, who is Azerbaijani and Chinese.

However, Andrew has never felt comfortable around Lisa and Layla.

“When I hung out with Andrew after the pandemic ended, I noticed he’d leave my side once the twins came close to me. I found that very weird because those girls were known to be nothing but kind,” she explained.

No One Would Tell Her Why

She asked Andrew if he had an issue with the twins, but he refused to discuss it.

The girl asked her friends multiple times why Andrew was avoiding them. They pretended like they didn’t know, but the way they giggled and gave each other sly looks made the girl suspicious.

Lisa and Layla’s dad died in an accident, so she started spending more time with them – as any good friend would. During one hangout, she noticed something weird on Lisa’s phone. Lisa had left it unlocked and in full view while she went to the bathroom.

It was a private Instagram chat, which this girl wasn’t part of. Curiosity got the better of her, and she scrolled through the comments.

The girl recounted, “It was FULL of old messages about Andrew, how he ‘brought covid to school,’ and questions like, ‘Has he ever eaten a dog? They even questioned how I managed to hang out with him.”

She felt angry and betrayed and immediately left.

The young woman didn’t want these people in her life anymore, so she blocked them on social media and ignored all their calls and texts. When they turned up at her house, she stayed in her room and asked her parents and siblings to get rid of the visitors.

She told Andrew everything. He said she’d done the right thing and thanked her for telling him.

Now she’s getting called out by other people, who say she should have stuck by her friends and given them a break because they’re having a rough time.

“Some of my other friends are calling me a jerk for looking through her phone and ignoring them like this while they’re grieving. They’ve been crying on social media about how ‘cruel’ I am being,” said the girl.

Did She Cross A Line?

The girl doesn’t know if she’ll ever talk to Lisa and Layla again. She knows they crossed a line, but a small part of her wonders if she should cut them some slack, given what they’ve just been through. So she asked Reddit if she was doing the right thing by ignoring these girls.

People Responded

“Yes” replied one person. “Your friends are racist jerks, and they got found out. Cry me a river. I couldn’t care less that you went through their phone; they’ll just use that as an excuse to make you the bad person in this situation.”

Another user wrote, “Your former friends gave you signs that something was off; you trusted your intuition and found proof of their racist behavior, then you used that proof to end any relationship with them. Actions have consequences, and this is their consequence.”
