The 27-year-old woman moved to a new city for a job. In the early days of their friendship, the woman decided to check the man’s background for her safety and discovered his court records. These records revealed that he had been involved in several troubling incidents.

While he was open about some of them, there was one serious record that he never mentioned. She recalled, “I noticed some of the white lies he told me. He said he had never been arrested, but I know from that record he must have been arrested.”

Despite her knowledge of his past, she didn’t confront him, believing he would tell her when he was ready. They continued to grow closer and spent a lot of time together. She didn’t let his past put her off getting to know him and didn’t judge him for his mistakes.

They argued and the truth came out

The woman explained her reasons for looking up his records, saying, “Back when we started seeing each other a lot, we did a lot of hiking and overnight road trips, and I barely knew this person and was completely new to the area. I wanted to enjoy life but also needed to worry about my safety.”

She thought she had done the right thing

She believed that not mentioning his records allowed him to talk about them when he was ready. She didn’t realize he’d be so upset by this.

She asked the internet for advice

She didn’t want to lose the man, but she wasn’t sure if looking up his past was the wrong thing to do. Not knowing how to handle this sensitive situation, she asked for help on an internet forum.

People responded

One person replied, “You did nothing wrong, and he shouldn’t have lied to you. Him then getting hurt about you acting like you didn’t know he was lying is pretty pathetic.”

Someone else replied, “You can’t invade a person’s privacy by looking up public records. Should you have told him up front that you did it? Maybe. He definitely should not have lied, and he doesn’t really have grounds to complain that he got caught in a lie.”
