She Openly Favored One Niece Over the Rest, but When Their Parents Demanded She Treat Them All Equally, She Defended Her Special Bond

A woman recently went online to ask if she was wrong to want to spend a lot more time with one of her nieces than her other nieces and nephews. Here’s her story.

“I don’t have kids,” the 30-year-old began. “That’s my choice.”

“That said, I love my nieces and nephews—although, more accurately, they’re my cousins’ children. I’m especially close to my niece Niya, who’s eight.”

She explained why

The woman explained that she had many reasons for feeling so close to Niya. She was the first child to be born in the family since the woman herself, and when the woman had been living with her cousins, she had taken an active role in helping to care for her.

The woman went as far as to claim that Niya would “literally ditch” her own mother for her.

It wasn’t the same

The woman admitted she had less of a bond with her other nieces and nephews because she’d been working away when they were born. She would maybe see them three times a year at most, although she would always play with them and give them presents when she did see them.

Because of their special bond, the woman loved to take Niya on trips with her. She’d taken her to parks; she’d taken her camping; she’d even taken her to Disneyland.

She wasn’t as keen on the others

The woman said that she was “cool” with her other nieces and nephews, but she didn’t enjoy spending time with them as much. In fact, she thought they acted spoiled. Niya, on the other hand, hadn’t even cried when she was with the woman, who’d been her “comfort space.”

Their parents weren’t happy

The woman then revealed that her cousins were “low-key mad” with her for taking Niya on so many wonderful trips. They think she should lavish the same love and attention on their children too.

She defended herself

In response, the woman argued that taking young children she barely knew on long trips would be a nightmare.

She asked the internet

She turned to the online community to ask if she was wrong to proudly show such favoritism to her oldest niece.

The internet responded

The internet backed the woman. “It’s your time, your money, and your life,” said one. “You love spending time with your niece, so do it as long as her parents are cool with it. It’s understandable that it may strain relations with other members of the family.”

“Since they aren’t siblings, honestly, you’re doing nothing wrong,” said another. “Life just happened this way. And I’m pretty sure that they also wouldn’t want to spend so much time with you on a trip if they don’t know you well.”
