She Refused to Reconcile with Her Absentee Father, but When He Died and Left Her $500,000, the Stepmom She’d Never Met Began Demanding a Share

A woman recently went online to ask if she was wrong for keeping all of the inheritance her drug-addicted father left her. Here’s her story.

He walked out

“I had a pretty rough childhood,” the 21-year-old began. “My dad was a heroin addict when I was born, and when I was three, he just picked up and left my mom and me.”

“My older half-sister (we have different dads) was not a pleasant person to be around, and my mom was so busy working that I felt really alone.”

Tragically, the woman’s mother died, and the woman was placed in the care of her maternal grandmother.

The woman said that she missed her mom every day, but looking back, her grandmother gave her a much more stable environment to grow up in.

He reached out

When the woman was 19, her grandmother told her that her father had made contact and wanted to see her. She shut down and refused to even consider talking to him.

As it turned out, the woman’s father was clean and had remarried. Sadly, however, he also had stage-five prostate cancer and didn’t have long left to live. He wanted to make amends with his daughter while he still had time.

Even this didn’t change the woman’s mind, and her father died with her refusing to return his messages.

She was the major benefactor

After her father’s passing, the woman’s “stepmom” got in touch. She told the woman that her father had left almost everything he had to her: his house, his life insurance, and his savings. In total, he’d left her around half a million dollars.

In contrast, he’d left her and his stepchildren $100 each.

Her stepmom wanted more

The woman’s stepmom began demanding that the woman agree to share her inheritance with her and the woman’s “siblings” (her stepmom’s four children from a previous relationship, whom she’d never met).

She stood firm

The woman responded that her father had abandoned her while her stepmom and stepsiblings had gotten the best parts of him. She wasn’t sharing anything.

It turned out that the woman’s stepmom hadn’t worked since moving in with her dad, and she wasn’t planning on working now. She lived in the house that the woman now owned, but her name wasn’t on any of the deeds, giving her no right to live there.

The woman said she wasn’t going to kick her stepmom and half-siblings out of their house, but she was going to draw up a lease. Other than that, she didn’t plan on sharing anything with them.

Was she being harsh?

Yet the woman still felt a little bad for her stepmom. She asked the online community for their thoughts.

The internet responded

The internet backed the woman. “You don’t know his wife. You don’t owe her anything,” stated one. “If your father left them each $100, he knew what he was doing. That inheritance is yours. Good luck in your future.”

“Your dad made the decision to leave absolutely everything to you, so he clearly felt you deserved it and they didn’t,” said another. “It feels to me like he realized he’d shortchanged you on a relationship, so all he could do was leave you an inheritance.”
