Her Boss Is Making Her Help Her Colleague Off the Clock so She Asked for A Raise but He Said No

A woman recently found out that her boss had ‘volunteered’ her time to help another worker with their studies outside work hours. She asked for a raise, but the boss said no. Here’s what she had to say.

She got certified

The 32-year-old woman who works at a daycare had recently obtained a certification through an online school. Another teacher, Estelle, who was probably in her 50s, showed great interest in obtaining the certification as well.

It was a lot of work

“The thing is, it’s a lot of work. The certification is pretty much self-directed, and then you have to fill out a ton of paperwork, take an extensive exam, and then be evaluated as a teacher,” she said.

It had taken the woman over a year to obtain her certification. Their boss, Adrian, approached the woman and asked her to help Estelle enroll, as she was unfamiliar with the website.

She agreed

The woman agreed, and they signed Estelle up, emphasizing the intensive nature of the program. Estelle agreed to proceed and paid for the classes, which were non-refundable.

More help was needed

Later, Estelle asked the woman to help her order the necessary materials from the website. Despite finding this odd, the woman agreed to help.

It kept happening

“We get this done, and that’s when Estelle started asking me the same questions about the course that I had already answered. She still didn’t seem to get this is a self-directed program,” she explained.

The boss promised

Estelle later approached the woman, asking for help with assignments and studying. She claimed that Adrian had promised her help. The woman confronted Adrian, who said it wasn’t a lot of work and that she should help Estelle off the clock.

She wouldn’t work for free

The woman refused, stating that she wasn’t a teacher or administrator and wouldn’t do it without a raise. Adrian was unhappy, but there was nothing legally she could do.

The coworker panicked

Estelle was upset and frantic, claiming she couldn’t complete the program alone and had already invested a lot of money in it. Some colleagues sided with Estelle, saying that the woman was being unfair since Adrian had lied to her.

No one else could do it

They argued that Estelle couldn’t afford to waste the money and needed help to see the program through. However, the woman was the only one at the daycare with the certification, so no one else could help Estelle.

The woman asked for advice

“Nope, NTA. Why are you supposed to help this coworker OFF THE CLOCK for a self-directed course? Sounds like she doesn’t understand what she signed up for, and your boss wanting you to help her out without pay is equally clueless,” one said.

Another noted, “Yeah, as soon as Adrian said this was off the clock and on personal time, there was no doubt OP is NTA. It’s not even about a raise or not. There is no reason she should do this for free.
