She Told Her Sister Not to Let Their Parents Know That She’s Very Sick but Her Sister Thinks This Is a Really Bad Idea

A 23-year-old woman was recently confronted with the harsh reality of a terminal illness, giving her approximately one year to live, even with medical intervention. She didn’t want her sister to tell the family and the sister thinks this is wrong.

“My parents don’t understand why and have questioned me quite a bit about it, and my responses have been, I don’t really feel like talking about it, and they have respected that,” the woman said.

Her sister found out

About two weeks after moving back home, the young woman received a phone call from her doctor while her younger, 17-year-old sister was unknowingly at home. She had the call on speakerphone, and her sister overheard the conversation.

Her sister was angry

The sister confronted her, calling her selfish for not disclosing her illness to the family. She expressed concerns about what would happen when she started showing signs of her illness and reached a point where she couldn’t care for herself.

“She demanded that I tell my parents as soon as they got home as well as my other sibling, grandparents, and even friends,” the woman said.

The young woman pleaded with her sister not to say anything, and although her sister reluctantly agreed, she still expressed her belief that it wasn’t the right thing to do.

Now, the young woman feels guilty about keeping her illness a secret. She wants her final moments to be filled with happiness, fearing that revealing her condition would only bring sadness to those around her.

She also worries about having to comfort and cheer up her loved ones, as she has always been the one they turn to during difficult times.

The woman reached out to Reddit

One user said, “Honey, I don’t want to call you TA here, but the honest truth is that you now live with your family. That means that when things get worse, they are going to be the ones there to take care of you, and they really should be aware and able to prepare for that.

“I understand that you don’t want to hurt them, and you don’t want to have to console them when you are going through it, but I do feel like it’s important to sit them down and have a conversation about it.”
