She Was Furious with Her Sister-In-Law for Using Netflix as a Means to Avoid Parenting Her Kids, Leading Her to Cancel Her Subscription

A woman recently questioned whether she made a mistake by canceling her Netflix subscription without informing her negligent sister-in-law, who relied on it to avoid taking care of her children. Here is what the 41-year-old woman had to say.

They Got Netflix For Their Daughter

The woman explained, “My husband and I subscribed to Netflix seven years ago when our daughter (aged 18) asked us to. We were in a difficult financial situation, but we eventually caved on the condition that she spends one night a week watching it with us.”

Two years later, the woman’s younger brother married his wife, who had twin girls (aged 10) from her previous marriage. The woman “loves the girls to pieces.”

The woman’s brother and sister-in-law then had a new baby, a son, and it was from there that the problems started.

The woman’s new nieces were being dropped off at their house or their maternal grandmother’s house constantly, not once with even a word of warning.

The girls would be dropped off and picked up the following day before being taken elsewhere. The woman told her brother they needed to speak after a month of this happening.

Her Brother Needed Netflix

A week later, the woman’s brother replied to her text and asked for her Netflix login, as he and his children needed it for bonding time.

Though she knew she should have called her brother out, she did not want to refuse him, given that he was family.

Recently, the woman took her nieces to the park alongside her youngest daughter, who is 11 years old.

“One of my nieces asks to sit with me. She asks me why they don’t visit us often anymore. I say that she should be happy spending time with her parents. She admits that they are left to watch Netflix while her mom and dad spend time with the baby.”

Her Husband Got Mad

The woman told her husband what had been said when she got home, and her spouse was furious. He shamed the woman’s brother for being a bad father, whether biological or not, which was something the woman agreed with.

She Cancelled Netflix

The woman decided to end their Netflix subscription, which went far beyond teaching her brother a lesson, as she and her family never really use it anymore.

Her eldest child complained about the fact that they were going to ban account sharing anyway. She was now at college and the only person that used the account, alongside the woman’s sister-in-law.

The woman’s husband noted that the subscription money could go towards more useful utilities. So, they let their subscription run its course, and soon enough, the woman’s sister-in-law came knocking.

She berated the woman and her husband for canceling their subscription because her own family used the account too.

The Woman Hit Back

“I shut the door in her face and said she needed to seriously self-reflect. She scoffed and left. Ever since I haven’t seen them. My SIL has gone radio silent, and my brother only speaks to me through our parents.”

Her Children Suffered

This has upset not only the woman but her children, too, especially her 15-year-old son. Her brother had promised her son they would attend a sports event but canceled. The woman knows that, deep down, she did the right thing, but she hates seeing how miserable her children are.

The Brother Blamed Her

A Facebook post by the brother claimed that his and his wife’s relationship with the twins was now “totally unsalvageable.” The same post also blamed the woman and led to some nasty comments.

The woman has now turned to the internet and asked whether she could have handled the situation better. She is wondering if she should just eat her pride and re-subscribe to Netflix in order to establish some peace again.

One poster wrote, “Why should you have to warn someone who is mooching off of you that you’re going to cancel YOUR subscription?”

“I honestly don’t need to even read this to say you’re not the jerk here,” said another.
