Sibling Struggles: Should This Sister be Blamed for Refusing to Take in Her Homeless Sister with a Drug Problem?

The older sister of a homeless mother recently decided to allow her sister’s young son to live with her but refused to take in her sister due to her substance abuse issues. Here’s what the older sibling had to say about the situation.

The 31-year-old woman was raised by her single mother. Her younger sister, Angela, who was born with a substance addiction, lived with their grandparents. As a result, the sisters grew up more like cousins, and their relationship was very distant.

The older sister said, “My mom and I moved around a lot, and I rarely saw Angela. When I did, she was usually unpleasant to me. She got a lot of things I didn’t (a college fund, summer camp, new car, etc.), and she always made that very clear.”

When the older woman left home at sixteen, they kept in touch for a few years but eventually lost contact. They reconnected only after their mother’s death three years ago, and even then, they only spoke every couple of months.

Angela became a mother at a young age and had a three-year-old son named Peter. Struggling with substance addiction and an unstable lifestyle, Angela relied on her grandparents’ support.

“Her grandparents have now cut contact with her for the most part due to her lifestyle, and she has been moving from boyfriend to boyfriend since her son was born,” the older woman said.

A few days ago, the older sister received a call from Angela, who she hadn’t heard from in almost eight months. Angela explained that her boyfriend was in prison, and she was being evicted from their apartment because she couldn’t pay the rent.

With her grandparents not answering her calls, Angela pleaded with her sister to let her and Peter move in until she could find another place to stay.

The older sister didn’t want to bring Angela’s lifestyle into her home, as she already had two young children and a wife struggling with health issues. She was also the primary caretaker for her family. She didn’t want to take on the responsibility of caring for Angela as well.

“I told Angela this, but she said that she and Peter were going to have to live in a homeless shelter if I said no. Other than her grandparents, I am the only family they have. I don’t want Peter to suffer for something he didn’t do, so I agreed that he alone could come live with me until Angela got on her feet,” the older sister recounted.

Angela became very upset at this suggestion, accusing her sister of trying to separate her from her son. Since then, Angela has not spoken to the older woman, despite multiple attempts to contact her and check on her well-being.

The older sister loves Angela but knows that she would significantly disrupt her entire life if she allowed her to move in. Worried for the safety of both mother and child, she sought advice online asking whether her offer to take only her nephew was fair given her sister’s chaotic lifestyle.

One user posted, “You don’t have to take in anyone you don’t want to, family or not. Your life is important. If that person is an addict, that’s just another good reason not to want her around your young family. She’s ruined hers; she has no right to ruin yours just because she’s family. You did the good thing, offering to take her vulnerable, blameless son.”
