The Heater Broke in the Middle of Winter, So When His Landlord Refused to Do Anything About It, He Decided to Get Revenge

A man’s landlord refused to pay for repairs after his boiler broke down during the middle of winter. He had to cover the cost himself. He was furious, but then he got even. Here’s how he did it.

It was an old story

“I used to rent a house,” shared the man. “The landlord lived abroad, so his brother looked after maintenance, and the landlord’s lawyer looked after the contract/legal stuff.” That was around 10 years ago, but the story still makes the man smile.

He lived in Europe

The house was in northern Europe, where those winters get pretty chilly. The boiler breaking down in the colder months is an emergency. And that’s exactly how this revenge story started.

The boiler stopped working

“One winter, the boiler broke,” said the man. He called the landlord and his brother. No reply. Then he sent them dozens of texts. Still no reply.

He was freezing

“I spent the first night shivering under all the bedding in the house as temperatures outside approached freezing,” shared the man. He needed this boiler fixed ASAP.

They still didn’t answer

The next morning, with daytime temperatures at just 7 degrees Celsius (or about 44 degrees Fahrenheit), he spent another few hours trying to contact the landlord or his brother. But neither of them replied.

The guy was raging—and freezing. He couldn’t wait for someone else to fix this problem. “I decided to take matters into my own hands and ring around for an engineer to fix it,” explained the man.

The engineer fixed it

The engineer came late that evening and inspected the boiler. Then he replaced a broken part and billed the man for parts and labor. It was not cheap.

They finally called him

A few days later, the landlord’s brother finally got in touch. He apologized for the radio silence. The man said no worries, explained what had happened, and told the brother that he needed reimbursement for the boiler repair.

He said no problem

The brother said that was fine. Then he gave the man the number to the landlord’s lawyer. He would sort out the payment.

The lawyer stonewalled him

“I called the lawyer and explained everything,” said the man. He expected a full reimbursement and maybe a little sympathy. But he got neither. “He was like a brick wall,” exclaimed the man.

He hung up

The lawyer argued that the liability was all his. He accused the man of violating the tenancy agreement, and wouldn’t even agree to pay half of the boiler bill. The man was stunned.

The argument continued, but the lawyer wasn’t budging an inch. He told the man “to put this all down as a lesson learned and move on.” Then he hung up.

“I was not very happy, to say the least,” admitted the man. “The bill was pretty significant, and I had effectively repaired their boiler for them free of charge.” Plus, he had to endure the inconvenience and discomfort of being without heating in the middle of winter.

He decided to get his own back

He wanted revenge. “I was looking at the engineer’s bill, wondering what I could do,” he said. Then the man noticed that the bill was in his name. And that gave him an idea.

This revenge was served ice cold

He put the bill in a safe place, then waited eight months. Finally, his tenancy agreement ended. It was revenge time. A few days before he moved out, he put in another call to the engineer who had fixed the boiler.

He called the engineer

“I called the same engineer and asked him to remove the motor from the boiler,” explained the man. “He questioned why, but I talked around it, paid him cash, and all was good.” This obviously cost the man more money, but he was willing to pay. Because sweet revenge is priceless.

He got the deposit back

He made sure everything in the apartment was perfect for the inspection. “The brother came to the property. He had a look around to check nothing was damaged, then bid me goodbye, and I gave him the keys,” he says. The full security deposit landed in his account a few days later.

They called him up

Months passed by. Then he got a call from that jerk lawyer. He ranted at the man, asking why he had removed the boiler part. The man said he did take the part, but he would need his complaint in an email, and he had to go. Then it was his turn to slam the phone down.

He shut the lawyer up

Later that day, the lawyer sent him a furious email in which he threatened legal action. The man politely replied, explaining that he had paid for the boiler part and had the documents to prove it. At the end, he added, “I recommend you put this all down as a lesson learned and move on.” He never heard from the landlord, the brother, or that lawyer again. Revenge complete.

He never said sorry

“To this day, I’m not 100% sure I was legally in the clear,” said the man. “But it was definitely worth the risk, knowing that they had to pay for it in the end.”

People responded

“I hope the landlord made the lawyer pay for it,” said one person.

“Nice job! This was so satisfying to read,” said another. “I’ll bet that lawyer was boiling mad.”
