The Nanny Bought Books for Her Daughter but She Doesn’t Think She Has to Reimburse Her

A woman recently refused to reimburse her nanny for books bought for her daughter, arguing that she shouldn’t have to pay since she was unaware of the purchases. Here’s what she had to say.

The woman is a single mother, and her daughter, Ruby, is 12. Ruby recently got into the original Star Trek TV show and the Next Generation series.

Ruby is also a big reader and found some of the old Star Trek books in thrift stores and bookstores, which she has started to collect. More often than not, these books cost anywhere between 50 cents and a couple of dollars.

The woman has a 22-year-old nanny called Tessa, who looks after Ruby most days after she gets out of school. Tessa has been the woman’s nanny for over a year, and she and Ruby get on well together.

“Tessa is big into thrifting and will often keep an eye out for the books Ruby wants…This is not typically a problem, and Ruby always pays Tessa back for the books using her allowance,” she explained.

When Tessa went on a family vacation, she went thrifting and found some books for Ruby. She texted the woman’s daughter to see if she wanted the books and Ruby said she did.

Tessa returned with around 35 books and a massive stack of texts, then told Ruby they cost her about 50 dollars. Ruby told Tessa that she didn’t have enough money to pay. Tessa then asked the woman if she would cover the costs of the books that she had bought.

The woman provides Tessa with funds each month to cover whatever activities she plans to do with Ruby, such as going to the movies or the mall. This sum, however, had already been used up when she bought the books.

She explained that she had never asked Tessa to buy Ruby books, and she was completely unaware of the conversation she’d had with her daughter. This upset Tessa.

The woman asked Ruby to show her the texts and noticed that there was no mention of the books’ price or the amount she was planning to buy. Instead, Tessa said she had found “some” books for Ruby.

Ruby didn’t realize there would be so many books

The woman’s daughter is on the autistic spectrum, and she needs people to be very literal with her, so Ruby had no idea how many books there were.

Tessa had never bought more than one or two books at a time before, so the woman told her she should have clarified how many. Either that or double-check with her before buying so many. Then she said that she would not be paying the 50 dollars.

Tessa complained

Because the books came from a thrift store, Tessa told her she couldn’t return them. The woman stood her ground, reiterating that Tessa should have asked her first. From there, Tessa left, which resulted in Ruby getting upset.

She asked the internet for advice

The woman asked the internet if she was in the wrong for not covering the cost of the books, as she knows Tessa is a student and doesn’t have a lot of money.

“Sometimes it’s better to salvage an important relationship than to be right,” said one commenter.

Someone else said, “Pay for the books. Let Tessa know that you can’t do so in the future, though, without talking about it. Tell her how much you appreciate her thoughtfulness, now and always.”
