“The Trump Train Has Crashed”: Republicans Warned They Will Lose Everything if Trump Is Voted GOP Nominee

Republican Andrew McCarthy, an ex-federal prosecutor, cautioned the Republican Party that they stand to “lose everything” should Donald Trump secure the primary victory and subsequently challenge Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential race.

His concerns

McCarthy, previously an attorney for Rudy Giuliani, expressed his concerns on X, the platform once known as Twitter, stating: “Very simple: Trump can’t win. 65% already against him.

We could lose everything

He continued, “That’s before Dems launch [a] barrage after getting him nominated. If we finally grasp that, his support will collapse. If not, we lose everything, and Dems use majorities to remake Supreme Court. Nominate him if you want, but that’s reality.”

Trump has no chance

This is not the first time McCarthy has issued such a warning. In an article for National Review on August 1 titled “Trump can’t win,” he argued that the ex-president has no chance of reclaiming the presidency.

McCarthy also blamed Trump for the loss of the Senate for Republicans and suggested that the anticipated 2022 “red wave” failed to materialize due to Trump-backed candidates.

Despite legal setbacks, Trump continues to dominate the Republican primary polls. Data from FiveThirtyEight as of August 20 shows Trump leading with 54.3% of the Republican votes, while his closest competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, lags behind with 14.8%.

McCarthy responded

McCarthy, who has served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1986 to 2003, and currently contributes as a columnist to National Review, responded to comments on his X post saying that he personally would not vote for Trump.

He Can’t Win

“I thought he should’ve been convicted at impeachment trial,” McCarthy shared. “That means he should’ve been disqualified. Personally, I could not vote for him. But that’s irrelevant because he can’t win. His candidacy would mean Dems crush us. At least 2 catastrophic years after that.”

Responses to McCarthy’s warnings were mixed

Some suggesting that Trump should endorse other strong Republican candidates, while others criticized McCarthy and expressed support for Trump. One person commented, “Trump or bust! If he’s not on the ballot, I’m writing him in. The GOP is DEAD without Trump. They’d better make a choice right now to support him or give away ANY chances of a Republican President!”

Some agreed

Another shared this sentiment, stating, “Of course Trump can win and unless the cheating is rampant again, he will win in 2024. I don’t understand you at all. What exactly should President Trump have been convicted of in the impeachment trial, in your mind? What were the high crimes and misdemeanors necessary to convict? There were none.”

Sit this election out

Another person mocked the Republican voters saying, “That’s why Republicans should just sit this one out. I mean, your votes are getting stolen from you anyhow and the elections are rigged. It’s no use. Maybe you should just stay home and not vote on November 12th, 2025.”

GOP candidates aren’t popular

Someone else had issues with McCarthy’s logic, writing, “This logical fallacy that Trump can’t win but other GOP candidates can is not grounded in reality. Mitt Romney didn’t defeat Obama. Only one Republican has won the popular vote in the presidential election in over 30 years and it took 9/11 for that to happen.

Don’t blame Trump

They continued, “Claiming that Trump is the problem is intellectually disingenuous nonsense fueled by Never Trumpers. It’s bigger than that. Blaming Trump is just a band-aid.”

The need for a different Republican candidate

Someone else chimed in, offering advice, saying, “DeSantis isn’t the answer, either. The answer is a truly moderate Republican who isn’t interested in culture wars. But y’all ain’t ready for a Republican like that.”

Americans want justice

A Trump supporter noted that the problem is not Trump, it’s the government: “Many Americans from across all political spectrums are just learning that President Trump was illegally spied on and persecuted from before his 2016 unexpected win. Most Americans are just now realizing that they were misinformed by the people they thought they could trust. There needs to be accountability.”

People want Trump

Another commenter noted how people might stay silent, but they will vote for Trump, saying, “I know people are scared of him winning, but the real silent majority, the swing voters that aren’t terminally ranting online, genuinely voted for Trump in 2016 just to “shake up the establishment…and, well, they did.”
