They Decided Not to Serve Alcohol at Their Wedding and Their Guests Thought it Was a Joke When Only Water Was Offered

A couple recently made a surprising decision to serve only water at their wedding, which caused a lot of upset among their guests. The bride-to-be chose to prioritize saving money instead of providing drinks to the guests. Here’s what she had to say.

They have a budget problem

In the midst of wedding planning, a couple found themselves facing a dilemma. With a guest list of 100 to 150 people, they had to make some decisions about the type of wedding they wanted because hosting that many people would be expensive.

They opted for a dry reception

“My husband and I are paying for this all ourselves, as well as my grandma, who said she doesn’t care one way or the other on this issue. She just loves weddings,” the bride-to-be said. The couple decided to have an alcohol-free wedding because neither drinks alcohol.

“On top of that, we only really drink water. We rarely, if ever, drink soda, so most of the time, it’s only water with the occasional juice and milk. We don’t even drink coffee,” the woman said.

With this in mind, they chose to serve nothing but water at their wedding, hoping to save money on catering expenses. The cost of feeding 100-150 people was high, and although the woman’s grandmother was covering the food expenses, the couple wanted to save money on drinks.

The reaction was not expected

“We don’t want to have to pay for alcohol or soda. It is just a large added expense when we can just do filtered water for a MUCH cheaper cost,” the bride-to-be said. However, when the couple shared their plans with family and friends, their loved ones had mixed reactions.

Some options were suggested

“Some didn’t really care, but some were really upset about it. Saying that I can just have an open bar so I don’t have to pay for drinks (we could, but still have to pay for the bartender, and we just really don’t want to bother with alcohol there),” the woman said.

No one agreed with them

Others argued that they should at least serve soda, claiming that the children would be unhappy with water and the wedding would be boring without different types of drinks. One person even told her that this isn’t how weddings work.

She is confused about the issue

The woman said, “I didn’t think this would be a problem! It’s only water. I mean, don’t most people drink water every day anyway?”

She asked for advice

One user said, “I know that technically you could be in the right, but here’s the thing about weddings, the marriage ceremony is for you and your fiancé. The wedding is for everyone you’ve invited. It’s an event you’re hosting, and not providing any drinks other than water makes you a bad host/hostess.”

Another user said, “This is so bad it’s funny. If you do not have alcohol, offer a variety of nice beverages: soft drinks, iced tea, a signature virgin cocktail, and coffee/tea. If you cannot afford to properly host your guests, then you may have too many guests.”
