They Reported Their Noisy Neighbors to The Landlord After Finding Out They Were Running an Illegal Airbnb and Revenge Was Surely Served

He and his girlfriend moved into a quiet apartment they loved. But the solitude they enjoyed didn’t last long after a new neighbor moved next door. The constant music and door slamming raised their suspicion, and here’s what they discovered:

The couple lived in a quiet, affordable apartment in a small building with only 40 units across two buildings. It was tough for them to find this place because there weren’t many options available in their city, and they had to wait for a long time.

A New Neighbor Arrived

In September, they saw a new person moving into the vacant apartment next door. They noticed the new tenant bringing in new things like furniture and decor to set up their place.

The Noise and Disruption

After a while, they started hearing loud sounds. There was music playing loudly, and people were making a lot of noise. They even heard doors slamming, which shook their walls. At first, they thought it might be a housewarming party, so they didn’t say anything.

More Problems Arose

As time went on, the noise didn’t stop. There were always people going in and out, slamming doors. It started to bother them a lot. “We noticed a variety of people coming in and out of this apartment, and none of them seemed to be the same individuals. Parking also started to become much more busy than usual as well as the cars kept changing,” he said.

His girlfriend couldn’t sleep because of all the noise. She worked at night, so the noise was affecting her rest. “She felt the constant slamming of doors was not only disruptive but unusual behavior,” he said.

Their Shocking Discovery

One morning, she saw people carrying suitcases out from the apartment. Then, some cleaners came to clean up the place. She got curious and looked up the apartment on Airbnb and found it listed for rent! They were even more upset when they found out that four other apartments in their building were also listed on Airbnb.

This meant someone was making money by renting out these apartments. They discovered the person’s LinkedIn profile and business website. On his website, he claimed to be doing something called “retail arbitrage.” This meant he rented out a place meant for long-term stays on a short-term basis.

They Had to Do Something

This not only caused noise disturbances for them but also limited housing availability for others in need. Since their area had a shortage of available apartments, this made them very angry that this man and his partners were contributing to the problem.

They Took Action

They decided to report this to the leasing office to notify them of the illegal business. The office carried out an inspection and found out that subletting or short-term rentals were not allowed. They also sent the neighbor a letter to cease and desist any rental activities outside the lease agreement or face eviction.

People Responded

One person said, “Love this story. People like this are a good part of the reason why rentals are no longer affordable in many cities. Well done!!”

Another person wrote, “He could’ve gotten away with it if he’d just fixed the door!”
