17 Things People Can’t stop Romanticizing But Should

Everyone can agree that society as a whole needs to stop romanticizing things that are harmful to individuals and the planet. These things can include materialism, consumerism, and a focus on appearances. An internet survey recently asked, “What do you wish society would stop romanticizing?” Here are the top 17 answers.

Working Yourself to Death

“I do not do anything more than asked/required. No, I am not being lazy. I am enjoying my life.”

“Amen. Working yourself to the bones for corporations who won’t think twice before laying you off makes no sense.”

Toxic Relationships

“Ah, “the ride or die.”

“Everyone my age (millennial) has a horrible relationship, and people need to learn to leave toxic relationships.”

High School and Being a Teenager

“When I was in high school, and people told me it was the best time of my life, it almost made me suicidal. You’re surrounded by jerks, and your coping skills are just developing – how can it not get better?”

“As an adult, you’re still surrounded by jerks— the people who were horrible as teenagers are horrible in middle age, and those who were wonderful as teenagers are wonderful in middle age. But you are better at coping.”

Depression

“Many people seem to think depression means being sad all the time. Which isn’t wrong, to be fair. It’s more like being attacked by the dementors from Harry Potter (like you’ll never be cheerful again). I read that those were actually supposed to symbolize depression.”

“My boyfriend resuscitated me next to the toilet bowl. For real, it’s not cute. My soul aches, food tastes like ash, I can’t see colors or hear music the same way, and it hurts to breathe.”

Bad Tempers

“I’m a quiet, chill person until you annoy me.” They sound like edgy tweens trying way too hard. Just stop.”

“You’re not the only person that gets angry.”

Anxiety, OCD, and Other Mental Health Problems

“These are serious health issues that can be debilitating, and people will claim it to be quirky or different or something I don’t understand.”

“I have to have my pictures straight! Just my OCD!” No. That’s called not being a slob. OCD is washing your hands every time you touch something. So much so that your hands begin to bleed.”

Eating Disorders

“For some time, I ate once a day or didn’t eat at all. Didn’t drink enough, and every time I stood up, I almost blacked out unless I stood still for a few seconds. I started eating twice a day again, and I am getting better.

Child Beauty Pageants

“The fact that some parents force their kids to go to Beauty Pageants for their financial gain is disgusting to me.”

“This one has always weirded me out. I don’t see the appeal, but someone does, or else they wouldn’t have them.”

Glorifying Celebrities and Making Them Famous

“Especially rappers, I hate to be the guy, but many newer rappers can make inaudible noises and get millions.”

“Influencers are the big ones I see people doing this about. Celebrity culture, in general, is weird, though, and they’re just humans at the end of the day.”

Abusive Relationships on TV

“Specifically, the idea that it’s a woman’s job to “fix” their abuser.”

Alcohol and Getting Drunk

“I think it’s ridiculous that, when someone abstains from drinking alcohol, they are pressured to have some specific reason they don’t drink. Why isn’t “I don’t want to consume this drug” good enough? I say this as a drinker.”

Cheating

“It’s not cute, funny, cool, understandable, or glamorous. It’s the nastiest thing you can do to a trusting partner. It ruins people emotionally, destroys families, messes up children, and spreads diseases. Nothing worse than a lowlife cheater.”

“It isn’t glorification per se, but people on social media seem remarkably calm about cheating. Casual acceptance like that is almost as bad.”

Having a Soulmate

“People have forgotten how hard it is to find somebody who wants to spend the rest of their life with you. People (especially on Tiktok) think they should find their soulmate around 18-25. They don’t know how hard it will be and that it is bound to take a couple of heartbreaks to get there. If we normalized shorter relationships, people would get much less hung up about it.”

Healthcare Workers Dying During the Pandemic

“Them dying is a consequence of lack of preparation. They need protection, not glorification.”

“Yes, but you need the glorification to raise awareness of the situation. The glorification isn’t the issue here; it’s the response to follow through that needs serious work.”

Anti-GMO Rhetoric and Advertising

“Not only are GMOs perfectly safe, but we’ve also been genetically modifying food since the onset of rural culture, and most importantly, genetically modified foods have saved millions – possibly even billions – of lives. Anti-GMO campaigns among corporations are another marketing scheme that preys on the uninformed and ignorant consumer.”

Being a Soldier

“It is noble to be a soldier when you are defending your country or taking down tyrants, but most of what our army does is just to prop up the US as an empire, at the expense of whoever gets in the way. It might be necessary for us to remain a global superpower. Still, the soldiers are basically pawns for greedy people at this point. With some exceptions, I don’t think what they are currently doing is worth glorifying or romanticizing.”
